How did you come up with it? Some of them are really quite funny!

Isabel Abbie Mae, it's the name the breeders registered her with, shortened to Izzy.

oooh I'm in the process of trying to think of one now. DH thinks the whole thing is a load of old bobbins (his words) so I have carte blanche with choosing it.

There's quite a good doohickey on the KC website where you can tap in ideas and they can tell you if they are taken or not.

Years ago we were buying a Bichon pup, we tried name after name but none seemed to suit him IYSWIM.

DD2 asked one day, "mum what will we feed him"

Various dog foods were suggested before the idea of giving him left-overs was mooted.

Dh snorted "left-overs, in this house, with you gannets, poor dog won't have a snowballs chance of them will he"

So the pure white Bichon was christened

"Snowballs Chance" Chancy for short

I think quite a lot of KC kennel names are just the breeders names conflated - my dog is a Silandajo and the previous one was Rosenket (rose and keith, irrc)

Much like naming a house... I bet a lot of people would like a dog from the DunRoamin kennels...

Disenchanted3 · 25/02/2010 12:40

sorry i meant like the breeders name, the affix you add to your dogs and pups.

Do you mean an affix ('Slobberhound') or KC names ("Slobberhound Simon Cowell')? The KC website will let you test out affixes to see if they're taken, and if you check the contact lists on breeder website like Champdogs you can see what other breeders have called themselves.

I like themed litter names (biscuits, Coronation Street biddies, Elvis songs, etc) - gives you plenty of ideas and also clues you in to any suspect family relations when you're looking at a pedigree later on... Our dogs had KC names (sweeties and champagne cocktails, respectively), but they're nothing like the names they ended up with from us!

Yes, we have one. We wanted 'Semper Fidelis' which was my husband's (army) previous battalion's motto, it means 'Always faithful' and I though tit would be realy suited, even if a bit of a motuhful, but we weren't allowed it. We got our second choice, which is a battle honour of hubby's battalion.

You do have to bear in mind, names are only allowed 22 characters, inlcuding affix, so if you choose something too long, it means you're really limited in name choices for pups.

wildfig · 25/02/2010 12:45

sorry, x post!

EdwardianSnowdropExpert · 25/02/2010 12:46

ooops

sorry, no not choosing affix

Disenchanted3 · 25/02/2010 12:47

I'm thinking of using

Addexura

which is a mix of my kids names.

WDYT?

Sounds OK - on a par with my dogs affixes (I didn't know that's what they were called, but I thought that was probably what you meant).

My first dog's breeders named their litters alphabetically which I guess was quite a good way to keep track of them.

LittleB · 25/02/2010 14:24

My dog is Foxdown Magnus, foxdown is the name of the farm he came from and the breeder used it as the kennel name. My parents bred our dog when I was a child - her pups kennel name was samsara (after mine and sisters middle names - before perfume of the same name!) and their other names were themed after cars (my dads idea) things like midget, riley and sprite!

HewlettPackard · 25/02/2010 14:28

On your toes chalky.

The dog is Black

izzybiz · 26/02/2010 16:34

My Blue Staff is Bluebell Bluebottom, we named her Lola.

My friends dog came from a litter that all had ice cream flavours as their KC names!

ShinyAndNew · 26/02/2010 16:37

My mums black lab is 'pretty titch' because she was runt of the litter. The name was given by the breeder. We call her Bess.

Marne · 26/02/2010 16:40

My Staff is 'Starlight Asteroid'(i think).

vinhotinto · 26/02/2010 16:45

My parents dogs have names that are something to do with the country the breed comes from, can't remember what they are though.

Batteryhuman · 26/02/2010 16:45

My lab came from a litter who were all called Shepherd's Down something, Shepherd's Down being the name of the breeder's house.

Lastyearsmodel · 26/02/2010 17:33

Rotherdales

fruitshootsandheaves · 26/02/2010 17:35

I made up my previous dogs KC names but the two I have now came with theirs.

My old dog was Zoopa Zoomy Zeb!
