Got a questions about dogs, mixed breeds and mongrels

What is it that defines what the dog is called.
I know that one breed is a pedigree, I was told than anything else is classed as a mongrel but have also been told that if both parents are a pedigree then the pup will be classed as a mixed breed.

I'm just curious as what I thought was right is apparently wrong.

So, does anyone else know?

Mixed breed, crosses, mongrel, heniz57 all really the same. Now days there are lots of crosses that are given formal names jackapoo, cockapoo etc. However, there is no correct or incorrect terminology.

Well a purebred is a dog that is a specific breed, i.e. german shepherd etc. a pedigree is the paper that tells you his lines, sire and dam etc.

A crossbreed is a cross of two purebreds, i.e. labrador x boxer.

A mongrel is usually a dog that is a complete mix of breeds and is usually described as being what it most closely resembles, such as collie x.

Of course now there are a lot of people out to make a fast buck by crossing breeds and putting a fancy name on them, for example the poos and doodles etc!

I'd personally rather a mongrel to an overbred pure bred any day but I wouldn't pay hundreds for one when there are plenty in shelters.

the popular breeds are terribly overbred now and a lot of them are prone to terrible diseases.

I have a gorgeous x bred, mongrel, whatever you want to call him. It doesn't bother me whether a dog is a mongrel or not. Its just someone else made a comment in the past and have now changed their mind!

I just wondered who was right Too much time on my hands I think.
