I need your help, please, sweetie.

I have a friend - no, I really do, honestly - and she has a 9 month old GSD who is lovely, just quite bouncy and full of fun as they are at that age. She is a knowledgeable owner and has trained him quite extensively.

I am trying to persuade her that joining me and my pup on a pre-agility or flyball course would be a good idea (her pup loves balls) but she is a bit worried that he is too hyper and will steal other dog's balls etc. She also thinks it will be best to wait until he's been castrated, saying he'll be calmer then. I've tried arguing that castration won't calm him down, that he'll love the flyball etc but she's reluctant.

What do you think, oh venerable one?

TIA

Yes, Minimu what age? I want to do s'th like this with my pup when he's older.

I also want him to learn water rescue - has anyone done that?

minimu · 27/01/2010 08:07

They have to be 18 months old to compete but clubs start them earlier than thay for training. Does depend on the club but I wouldn't take a dog younger than a year at the very earliest.

The only dog water rescue club I know is the Newfoundland club but I will keep my ears open.

I do search and rescue which is great fun but land based! Can be harrowing at time depending on who we are looking for.

Don't worry, morethan and LBC - Minimu is going to start a new course.

Flyball by Distance Learning

Week 1 - Build Your Flyball Box

You will need:

1 - 48" x 48" Sheet of 5/8" or 3/4" plywood. ( Recommend CD grade or better )
4 - 2 1/2" corner braces (with mounting screws) The preferred type of corner brace has the holes inline. Do not purchase ones with off-set holes.
130 -#8 x 1 1/2" wood screws (Philips Head preferred)
1 - Piano hinge (will need to cut to length, approx. 20"), although any type of gate or door butt hinge will work (w/mounting screws). This is for the pedal to swing.
Paint, Sandpaper, White Glue (optional)

Pay attention at the back there!!!

Bella32 · 27/01/2010 20:11

Good work, morethan - knew you wouldn't let the side down

You and I shall be the rising stars of the Flyball by Distance Learning world, I can tell.

We shall be able to suffix ourselves MFbDL (Hons).

OP posts:
morethanyoubargainfor · 27/01/2010 20:18

and i haven't!

Now how long do you think it will take this MFbDL (Hons)? It just the striped one needs to clear his diary! .

here's to the rising stars 'clink clink'

Bella32 · 27/01/2010 20:27

I reckon, if we really knuckle down (which of course we will, unlike some ) we'll be kicking ass wrt flyball in no time.

The Midland Meteorites Border Collie Flyball Team shall run off whimpering with their tails between their legs when they see us coming, I can tell you.

Come to think of it, I would probably do the same...

Bella32 · 27/01/2010 20:58
