Kongs, that is!

I've just been sat watching my two with theirs and it's funny how different they are! The oldest (always believed to be the more intelligent one) chased it around the floor licking frantically at the opening to get stuff out (had to retrieve it from under the sofa twice). But I was in awe at the puppy - she just stood in one place and repeatedly picked it up and bounced it off the floor so everything fell out! Clever wee sod

They normally only get them as we're going out, so I've never seen them do it before, it's quite funny! Reminded me of the cream egg adverts

Mine only usually gets his when we go out too.

Once left him with it for 10 minutes and came back to find it empty - thought these things were supposed to keep them going for hours!

Puppy empties hers in record time then spends ages 'pinging' the rubber rim

Frozen tuna & rice keeps them going for hours

MrsL123 · 23/01/2010 14:10

I know sb, they never last long! I think they become experts at emptying them - the puppy has obviously developed her method! The only time I've ever come back to find something left in them was when I filled them with peanut butter, because they didn't like the texture. Anything else disappears in two minutes flat!

I think once they've got the hang of it, it's game over and it never takes long after that.

Bella, someone else suggested I freeze the treats - anything else I can use though (I hate the smell of tuna!).

Anything you want - wet dog food, moistened dry dog food, chicken, rice made with chicken stock. You can also do a Kong omelette - put some beaten raw egg in the Kong and microwave for a minute or so, then cool.

Bella32 · 23/01/2010 14:22

Cheese...

Bella32 · 23/01/2010 14:23

Rice with plain yogurt......maybe a few bits of ham mixed in...

sb6699 · 23/01/2010 14:27

Will you promise the Kong wont explode if I put it in the microwave!

Bella32 · 23/01/2010 14:30

Oh ye of little faith

MrsL123 · 23/01/2010 14:56

We're thinking about giving the dogs their morning feed in their kongs when we leave for work (instead of giving it to them while we're there), as the kongs are so bloody big they need loads of filling and they probably have their whole day's treat allowance in ten minutes! And then of course they're trying to put their kongs in your hand when you come home at lunch time (oi slave, fill this up!) so they end up eating even more

Great idea, MrsL - I give all my dogs their meals in Kongs. Think about it - a dog would naturally pick and scavenge, not wolf down a big bowl of food in one go

MrsL123 · 23/01/2010 15:11

I just keep imagining wainwrights spread under my sofa

And bounced off the walls by the puppy
