Lumps in cat's armpits.

I first noticed these a couple of years ago, got worried then as cat seemed perfectly well forgot about it.
I don't pick him up often as he is a very grumpy sod so I don't get a chance to feel his armpits [pawpits?] often but have felt them again occasionally.
Had a feel today and they are gone.
What are they? Glands? Does it mean anything that they were there before?

Hopefully. Weird that I am worried now that they have gone.
And yes he is very lovely.

It will have been his lymph nodes - they're in the same places as ours (armpits, neck, groin etc). If you can feel them, it usually indicates some kind of infection within the cat's body. It was probably just a minor infection that passed without intervention (maybe he had been fighting and had an infected puncture wound or scratch). But it can also indicate something very serious such as lymphoma, but if it was that he would have been dead by now (don't mean to be blunt - it's just that it's a very agressive disease and the enlarged nodes are one of the final stages - we first noticed them in our old cat a few years ago, and three days later she died )

If you notice them again, I'd go to the vet just to be on the safe side. I quickly examine ours every time they come for a stroking session, and it soon becomes routine. This site shows you where else to look for them, if he isn't too keen on an armpit massage
