Can dogs have asthma?

And if so what to do about it?

My lurcher has developed a cough after short burst of very very fast sprinting! It is likely to be the doogy eqvielent to human asthma? or something else like a heart defect?

I noticed it first about 4 weeks ago (have only had him 4 months). It can take him a hile to recover, today it lessened after about 10 mins and was completly over with 30 mins. Any idea what it could be and what i should do about it.

Just to bump up for you. You need Bella I am sure she will be along soon.

No medical training whatsoever so even if I made a guess it would be just that!

Have you taken him to see the vet I think I would pop along just to see what they say. Doesn't sound quite right to me.

morethanyoubargainfor · 11/01/2010 18:47

No i haven't taken him to vet yet. the strange thing is it doesn't happen everytime IYKWIM, and he can walk and walk for miles without coughing, it is just the masses of running that causes it.

I had a cat with asthma and this got better when she was treated with steroids. I think it would be a good idea to contact the vet for a check as if it is asthma he will need treatment and if it's not asthma they can advise on what else it could be.

Yes, they can but there can be several other reasons...

You really need to get him checked out. Sorry I can't help more

Keep us posted, please x

Thanks.

I will get him checked out and i will let you know what the outcome is.

Maybe its just jealously as victor has just had 7K spent on him fixing his leg! he wants to feel expensive as well .

There I told you Bella would know

Bella32 · 11/01/2010 18:58

But I don't know. I should change my name to CallYourVet

Morethan - yes, you can almost guarantee that if one needs the vet, then another one will

7k - external fixators? Titanium pins?

morethanyoubargainfor · 11/01/2010 19:16

bella don't ask! i would want a whole new body for that! but atleast he now has a lovely straight leg! he is only 2 what is he going to cost us for the rest of his life.

Has been a long road to recovery has been in plaster and on house arrest since 20th Oct. hopefully the cast might go this week though as he has now developed a pressure sore at the top and it is foul, i nurse humans-dogs are a whole other board game . i would prefer dogs anyday. (
