DD2 has a 4 month old female puppy and over Christmas she has been getting very friendly with DD1's adult male dog, ie at every opportunity she mounts him and humps away

Is this normal behaviour?

I don't know about that but my 12week dog humps my feet everytime I wear my favorite fluffy slippers.

it just seems very young let alone that she is female

I thought that my 12 week dog was young but my friends puppy who is also 12 weeks is apparently humping everything all the time so not to young and I have heard that female dogs hump litter mates but not sure on the girl dog humping though sure someone with more knowledge will be along shortly.

It is perfectly normal in make and female puppies, and is usually just play or over-excitement. Our youngest girl (dog!) used to hump her teddy bear frequently...

If you don't want her to do it, teach her what 'no' means, or the 'off' command, and use it everytime she does it. It is likely she will just grow out of it though, but some dogs do continue the behaviour into adulthood if it isn't stopped, (mainly dogs, nto bitches) and it can get a rather unpleasant response from other dogs if they object to it.
