And I'd like one of each flavour and colour. really really want a chocolate one next.

Am I alone in my sausage passion?

Bella, if your health objection to dachsies is the back problems, the breeders seem to have been working on correcting that... touch wood. If its something else we need to look out for please do warn us.

The oldest dog in the world at the moment is a 20 year old dachshund cross, inherited the title when the previous owner died at 21 IRRC - and that was a dachshund!

GrimmaTheNome · 16/12/2009 20:16

Recently someone said to us outside a teashop, you don't see many of those nowadays... at which point a long-haired standard black-and-tan bitch arrived

BellasSparklyBaubles · 16/12/2009 20:24

Grimma - yes, it's the back but also I just don't like any of the very exaggerated features that man's selective breeding has produced. I don't mean to offend any of you dachsie owners and, like I said, I've known some lovely ones.
I also used to have quite a serious Dandie Dinmont thing going on at one time

GrimmaTheNome · 16/12/2009 20:33

The overlong back is definitely not a good thing but apparently the short legs in daschs and bassetts is the same mutation as dwarfism in humans so any objection to that is just heightist

It doesn't stop the little devil running faster and walking further than I can!

BellasSparklyBaubles · 16/12/2009 20:37

Grimma - if I didn't like you so much I'd get into a huge spat with you about recessive genes Don't wind Bella up when she has PMS, okay?!

GrimmaTheNome · 16/12/2009 21:23

Oh! Thats the first time anyone has said they liked me on MN - so I shall graciously catch the HobNobs and share them with my sausage

BellasSparklyBaubles · 16/12/2009 22:20

BellasSparklyBaubles · 17/12/2009 09:31

...although clearly you missed that 'I love Grimma' thread a while back, honey. It's closed now - over 1000 posts

GloriaInEccentrica · 17/12/2009 09:39

If I don't get one for christmas i'm going to be sorely disappointed. (and yes i know - a dog is for life....... but i don't get presents at any other time).

At least they are the ideal shape and size for Santa to get down the chimney

GrimmaTheNome · 17/12/2009 10:32

I'd quite like a chocolate dachshund for Christmas too ... or a chocolate labrador...or even a chocolate mouse ...no-one ever buys me chocolate!

Anyway, I'll take this opportunity to link to the breed anthem:The Dachshund Song.

GloriaInEccentrica · 17/12/2009 10:38

anothe song

i so want to go to the dachshund festival. although those american ones are all huge. mine's only the size of their heads.

GrimmaTheNome · 17/12/2009 11:56

They look quite normal sized to me, I guess mine is quite a big boy (about 11kg of lean dog). They seem over-fond of weird colours in the US though.

GloriaInEccentrica · 17/12/2009 19:10

yes. not sure about the white ones. mine is a smallish small one. handbag sized but much too hard to go in one.

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 17/12/2009 21:24

Heck no, no self-respecting dachshund would be seen dead in a handbag. They're hounds for goodness sakes, not 'toys' - bred to terrorise badgers (or in the case of little'uns, rabbits).

People seem suprised when they see ours at the top of a mountain. When we last climbed Pen-y-Ghent someone said, 'I bet thats the first time one of those has been up here' ... well,no, it wasn't even the first of ours to have done so.

GrimmaTheNome · 19/12/2009 21:22

Seen [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lU7LhPRg_U this] one, Gloria

derrymac · 19/12/2009 23:24

We've got a standard black and tan and she's named Cookie cos my 11 yr old DD asked 2 yr old DD wot we shd call her and i think she said oggie (as in Doggie) but DD1 said 'Cookie' that's a gr8 name! She's adorable.

Ronaldinhio · 19/12/2009 23:27

i have a minature long haired black and cream

best dog ever

my friend has a cream and a dapple I adore them

FernieB · 20/12/2009 09:44

Love them too. Years ago I was an au-pair in France and the family had one and it used to follow me everywhere. When I finally left the family, I really missed the dog.
