After much investigation and working out we've decided we'd like a Labernese after Christmas - does anyone on here know of a good reputable breeder that I can go to they'd recommend? Am hoping the dog gets the Bernese no-drool rather than the lab slobber over everything gene

I'd rather take a personal recommendation than run the risk of a puppy farm.

Never heard of them - can work out from the name what they are, of course, but there are new concoctions every day.

FWIW, after some quite traumatic labradoodle threads (I kid you not) I wouldn't ever pin my hopes on getting particular genes from either parent.

If you're after a crossbreed, why not go to a rescue?

is that a lab crossed with a Bernese mountain dog? how on earth does anyone arrive at that combination as their ideal breed?

ooh have been googling, they sound NICE

They are daft/soft and intelligent without being spaniel/collie neurotic when left alone for more than 5 minutes.

They are good with other dogs.

They have to be slowly built up over 2 years to long walks due to both breeds having hip issues - DS will be toddling about April so loooong walks won't be for ages yet.

They are good with children - although obv wouldn't leave any dog with a child.

And they look like bears

And they are a good compromise for myself and dp who wants a newfie.

Okay - I can see why they appeal but (without always sounding like the voice of doom!) can you imagine what it is like having a big puppy/dog that you cannot tire out through exercise because of the risk of hip dysplasia? It can be fecking hard work, tbh

And lots of breeds/mongrels can be trained to be left alone - I wouldn't pin all that on a particular breed.

Blimey that sounds like a tall order for the dog I hope they have read their new breed expectations!!

Dont want to sound grumpy but these so called designer breeds are cross breeds. Go to the resuce centre there are hundreds of dogs needing a home. As some will be adult or teenager dogs you will be able to see exactly what their requirement is and their temperament. That way you will not be disappointed if the designer cross breed has the negative genes rather than the positive one!!!

Eg the labrdooddles that moults and people are allergic too.

Positively breeding these two could lead to a disaster re Hip dysplasia and cancer. Bernese are very prone to cancer.

Don't dismiss the resuce dog. If you like we can give them designer names instead of calling them crossbreeds!!

I have currently been training two rescue dogs for disabled dogs for children and they have been an absolute dream and have transformed two families lives in a very positive way.

sounds like an interesting cross, never heard of them.

i have a DDB and a BM, both could suffer with HD, walking levels vary, only small initally, but have built it up now they are nearly 2. have 2 children aged 4 and 5 (nrly 6/7) and it isnt so much about the size of the dog with toddlers, ive found its the planning thats involved with keeping them seperate at different times to stop and 'trampling' - we now live in a house of stair gates!

We are hoping to get one in the summer (as they are the recommended breed for Autism Assistance Dog in Canada and the US) and train it to help our son.

hi, i have a son with autism and found the labernese breed by accident. i have currently bought a labernese puppy and i am impressed. ,they are gentle, caring and loving. easy to train and clever. she is not slobbery as she looks similar to a labrador. i love her and think she will be great for my son. having a bigger dog is less threatening to thew dog when my son has a meltdown, also he cannot pull around a big dog. she loves being cuddles. all i would say is she does suffer with some separation anxiety and started howling at night. her toilet training is coming along fine and i praise her rather than tell her off. def check the breeder. i found mine in bristol.

The other day I was out with my dogs and met a woman with her dog, I said that the dog looked lovely, she said " oh she's a sprocker crossed with a lurcher " a mutt then.

Then we meet a charming little dog who was a cockador. FFS.

wow, listen guys i cannot go for a rescue dog because with my autistic son he would be too loud and unpredictable for a dog that may have been abused. plus i wont know the history. i have ha da rescue dog before but that had issues. the labenese is amazingly soft, gentle, loving, calm, doesnt bark alot and loves children. she will grow a good size which means she can have huge cuddles and my son cannot push her around. they need an hours exercise roughtly a day that suits me and my son and i am being careful not to over walk her. i researched loads before i got the labenese puppy and i love her. she is great with my son and as she is a puppy she can be trained accordingly. when you have a child with needs you need to be careful.

bere why not look for a breeder of an actual breed? One that has been bred over centuries for specific characteristics? Given the restrictions of genetics no one can make the claims they do about these new mongrel mixes. It takes many generations to breed in or out certain characteristics, add to this that you can only breed from the best specimens, are restricted by the results of health screening, bitches should only have one litter a year and not be too young or too old, etc and it's clear that the claims that are made about these new 'breeds' are hot air.

A labernese? Now I have heard it all! Sounds like a complete disaster of a crossbreed. Labs with their joint issue and BMD rarely get to a good age due to cancer. Got to ask why anyone is breeding these mutts.

everyone has their opinion. as i do mine. i did look for a labrador and i did end up finding the labenese. she is a lovely beautifull dog and hopefully will have a good long life with us. every dog can have issues or cancer. just like people.
my lovely puppy is lush, calm and im happy i bought her. as much as i welcome your comments vet nurse and booboostoo when have you actually seen a labernese, stroked one or spoken to families with one? if you look at history of dogs they all had to start from somewhere, oh let me guess the wolve.

No I haven't spoken to anyone with them as they aren't a breed. They are a crossbreed. You have to ask why someone would be breeding this cross? Must be to make money. I dread to think how much you paid for her.

bere I am glad your puppy has worked out and I hope she continues to have a nice temperament into adulthood - I didn't realise you had already bought her. However, this doesn't change the fact that you took a risky decision on a mutt. I agree that all breeds have to start someone but that doesn't mean that anyone's haphazard experiments in breeding are a good idea for a family dog.

i know there are bad breeders out there that put profit before the health of the puppy. i did have a jack russell however it was a nightmare between puppy and my son and i had to rehome the dog with a friend whom has a jack russell already. i am not an irresponsible dog owner. i did my research carefully. a therapy dog for autistic children is £5000 way above what i can afford. i am my sons carer as cant work due to school sending him home or him being imbetween schools and the hospitol appt take all day. so i do not work but because i cant have babysitters im at home and i like a dog for company and safety as well as for my son as a smaller dog was not ideal. the labenese dog came from a breeder whom i spoke to at length and they were able to tell me of other homes with autisitic children they have homed their puppies with, they have good feedback. they were not in it for the money just but had a wide knowledge and love for the dogs. poppy doesnt bark unless left at night, she is calm and loving and loves my son, she will sit and be hugged and kissed and loves it like a lab. the bernese also can have a soft tempermant too which makes her extra soft. she loves kids. because she will be a large labrador as such she will not be pulled or picked up and i think that will help too. it is calming my son and i needed the atributes of the breeds together. i havent just bought a puppy but this is the third litter from the same parents over 3 years and the placid calm parents make great puppies.

Bere - fantastic choice! I rescued one last year. He is very intelligent, a shadow to my husband! LOL!
He was 5-6 months when we got him and have had him for a year now.
He is such a joy. He trained fast! Only a few accidents in house. He was totally house broken within a week. Learned the basics, sit, lay, stay, shake and high fives, quickly. He's very friendly, loving and only barks to alert us to someone in the drive. He's great with our other dog, family cat and children. We have found he is still a puppy teenager, and read they mature late. We love him! I cannot say enough about him! Beautiful, soft and cuddly. He loves being with us and prefers to be wherever one or all of us are. He's funny, goofy and everyone loves him. I will try to post some pictures later. As far as someone mentioned, he does have his drooling times but mostly just a mess after getting a drink of water. LOL! I wish you the best with yours and a long happy, healthy life.

I have just bought a labanese puppy from Bristol I have 3 other dogs and he loves them all I also have 5 children 2 have ASD i have had him a week today and he is doing very well on training he will go into the garden if the door is open for the toilet and he will already sit and shake a paw for a treat however he doesn't like to be left on his own even in a different room. He is very calm and loves cuddles and to sleep I'm just hoping he is going to be a big boy because we have called him bear.

Hello, did you manage to find a lovely labernese dog? I have come across one in my local dog shelter and would love to adopt her, she is so lovely natured as many of you have described. berewolve1, you mentioned they only need an hours exercise per day, is that really the case? Had assumed it would be more, given they are such large dogs

Stop calling it a Labernese - it's not a breed!!
The dog looks lovely and I'm glad he helps your son but just call him a cross breed or mongrel and stop making up words

Why do people get so cross about these names? They are useful, you know straight away what breeds have been mixed. What is your problem?
