My dog just died

I feel gutted. I can't believe how bad I feel.

She was a springer spaniel, 11 years old. We had her since she was a several weeks old. Just had to have her put down today. The other option was a major operation with little chance of survival and a poor prognosis anyway.

All this dog ever did was love us and I feel like I led her to her death down at the dreaded vets.

I am being a big pathetic baby about it and need a bit of mumsnet sympathy.

(((Hugs))) it's really hard sometimes to do the "right" thing with pets, they are family aren't they! Be kind to yourself xxx

thighsmadeofcheddar · 14/11/2009 19:49

Oh take care, it's ever so hard.
Lots of chocolate for you all.

BitOfFun · 14/11/2009 19:50

I'm sorry- I cried like a loon when my dogs died.

BellaBonJovi · 14/11/2009 19:51

So,so sorry.

You did the right thing. Would have been wrong to put her through a big op at that age, especially if it probably wouldn't have helped.

You have my every sympathy x

Fivesetsofschoolfees · 14/11/2009 19:52

So sorry for you

me23 · 14/11/2009 19:54

aww I'm sorry

GhoulsAreLoud · 14/11/2009 19:54

Oh I'm so sorry.

I've got a springer too and they are such loving dogs.

Sounds like you gave her 11 wonderful years though.

lilolilmanchester · 14/11/2009 19:55

that's really sad, nothing pathetic or babyish about grieving for a pet you loved but you did absolutely the right thing for her xxx

MammKernow · 14/11/2009 20:01

You are not being pathetic, it is devastating - altho what you did is for the best, it is still an incredibly hard decision to make.

You gave her a good life, eventually you'll remember the good times, but for now grieving is a very natural reaction.

Very sorry for you

PlasticBandit · 14/11/2009 20:18

You put her needs before yours. That is really brave. Don't feel guilty, but feeling sad is not pathetic. The idea that the death of a pet is somehow less of a loss than any other is a myth. FWIW, my Mum had to have her dog put down a couple of months ago. She cried and cried for weeks and was unhappier about that than when her own Mum died. You can't judge feelings; they are what they are.

Lapsedrunner · 14/11/2009 20:21

((((hugs)))) don't feel guilty, I'm dreading the day this happens to us.

LovestheChaos · 14/11/2009 20:23

Thanks guys. She was the sweetest dog and we just feel really empty.

Hassled · 14/11/2009 20:26

I'm so sorry. I had to have a cat put down a few years ago and like you felt like I'd taken him to his death - it's horrible, but you did the right thing.

abra1d · 14/11/2009 20:26

I lost my dog at 13 last May and we were all wrecks. Just wrecks. How could you not be?

But we felt better quite quickly (though we missed her) because we knew we'd done the best thing we could for her and she'd had a nice doggy life.

Now when I think of her I just chuckle. She was a naughty thing in her salad days but a great character. HOpe you feel better soon.

southeastastra · 14/11/2009 20:26

sorry for your dog

GrimmaTheNome · 14/11/2009 20:43

So sorry, chaos.

You led her to the vets to give her a peaceful end.

Dogs are such a physical, audible (not to mention olfactory) presence that their absence can leave a huge hole in our lives.

Ingles2 · 14/11/2009 20:45

ahh you poor thing... Such a horrible thing to have to do.
a very unmumsnettey (hug)

TrinityHasAVampireRhino · 14/11/2009 20:51

you didn't do a bad thing

you did the right thing for her

she had 11 fantastic years with you and then you stopped her pain and suffering in the calmest way

your not being silly, you're grieving

sorry for your loss

MmeLindt · 14/11/2009 20:53

I am so sorry, don't feel bad about putting an end to her suffering.

(((hugs))) even if it is UnMNetty

Divatheshopaholic · 14/11/2009 20:54

doggiesayswoof · 14/11/2009 20:56

I'm so sorry.

You made the right decision - as someone else said, you put her needs before yours which is very brave.

Be kind to yourself.

I remember being heartbroken when our family dog was put down as a child. My dad vowed never to get another dog as it was to painful when they died. I have a rapidly ageing old lady now and know all the pain of her passing at some point will be far outweighed by the joy and companionship she gives us. Your darling doggy is free from pain and at peace. You miss her. Please don't feel bad for acting in her best interests. Try and remember the good bits. She was worth it, after all! Thinking of you.

carriedababi · 14/11/2009 21:45

so sorry for your loss, pets are like a part of the family.

2shoes · 14/11/2009 21:45
