Cat behaviour tips?

We've got a small, 2yo neutured female cat, that has got a lovely personality in general. Occasionally though she'll be happily purring away being petted by ds(8) and suddenly bite him for no good reason. She does the same when you walk past her on the stairs. 99% of the time she just watches you walk past and then there's the odd time where she jumps your feet and scratches or bites. It's getting worse and I'm not sure what to do about it, except for picking up the cat and throwing her outdoors, although usually she's ran off before I can do that. Any ideas what could be causing this behaviour or what to do about it?

Supposedly it's about dominance in the pack...personally I think this is a load of rubbish. Cats tend to do this if the get over excited, fustrated or want to play and don't know how to ask nicely. Best advice I can give is to put aside 15 mins a day everyday at the same time for cat play time, if they 'attack' at any other time a firm "no" in a growly voice immediately upon attack or at stalking point tends to be enough to put across the point.

Thanks for that. I think maybe with a new(ish) baby in the house she might have gotten a little neglected on the play front. Will try that and see if that works.
