New cat spraying - how to stop?

We have just rehomed two rescue cats who were rehomed together as they would not be separated. Female is shy, but no concerns. Male (neutered) has urinated on the hall carpet yesterday, and again today, despite using the (scrupulously clean) litter trays for the best part of a week. Any tips on how to stop this behaviour?

I am assuming it will help when we can let him out, but will go made if I end up scrubbing stinky wee out of my carpet every day until then.

I had this problem with my new tom and it continued until he got out- I did use tinfoil in areas that he favoured and that seemed to help. You need to roll out a length and leave it in the place that he is spraying.

It took about 2 weeks for him to settle down and he trashed loads of things in the process (3 pairs of expensive kneehigh, leather boots for example).

Make sure you're getting the smell out - any ammonia based cleaner will make the smell worse from a cat's view, and encourage further spraying.

Best one to use is a specialist pet odour remover from a pet shop or vet.

Also a feliway diffuser (bit like a plug in air freshener) releases pheromones which can reduce a cat's stress and help stop spraying.

Thanks Bella. We've put some vinegar solution down in the hope of neutralising the ammonia, and are off to the pet shop tomorrow to see what they can sting us for else might help.
