Can I put a guinee pig and rabbit together?

At the moment we have a ten week male rabbit its got a big cage with free access to a huge run can I introduce a guinee pig as a playmate? They would share a cage at night if they chose to.

i know people that have had the two together although its recommended not to let them share if you have the option to keep them apart there is no harm in trying i guess

I don't think it's recommended as the rabbit can hurt the guinea pig. Probably not intentionally, but just due to the size difference. I've known people who have sucessfully kept them together though.

Is it too late to get another rabbit if we've had this one two weeks.

Not recommended that guinea pigs and rabbits are together for all sorts of reasons. I wouldn't do it.

its not to late to get another rabbit at all best introduced before they get too old 10 weeks is still quite young

our rabbit and guinea pig shared a hutch and run and it worked really well. the rabbit was very protective of the gp, but used to try to mate with it in spring

when the rabbit died, the gp went into mourning and was never the same again

No. Guinea pigs need the company of other guinea pigs - not rabbits.

Rabbits tend to be bigger and more aggressive than guinea pigs and male rabbits have injured g-pigs by trying to mate with them.

Also dried rabbit food is not suitable for g-pigs (does not have added vitamin C as rabbits can synthesise their own, whereas G-pigs need specific g-pig food with added vitamin C). Though if you are also feeding them plenty of fresh veg this is less of a problem.

No they are not recommended hutch mates. I thought rabbits were actually quite solitary creatures unlike piggies that are very sociable with their species and will substitute for humans if that's all that is available

our rabbit was a dwarf variety so not much bigger than the guinea pig - maybe that made a difference? it worked very well for our two anyway

i think it is 50/50 and probably depends on the individual animals.
there are plenty of places that they are kept together,
would same sex help?

Why risk it?

If you get one pig and it doesn't work you will have to get another guinea pig.

Just get another rabbit.

We have a male rex rabbit who has been neutered and two female guinea pigs. They have separate hutches but do spend most of the day together in a large run. They get on really well.

I always wanted a couple of rabbits but was told by someone from the local rabbit society that two rabbits shouldn't live together, but if they are on their own males should be castrated to stop them spraying and being aggressive and females neutered because they get pmt and can be aggressive as a result! Guineas and rabbits shouldn't live together for all the reasons already mentioned.

We have brought him a tunnel a chew toy and a carrot tree and he looks very pleased
