How much does it cost to have a dog put to sleep......and will vets wait for the payment? :-(

I'm so sorry to be asking such a horrible question

But I could really do with knowing how much having my darling dog put to sleep and cremated would be (she has cancer )

Also if you can't afford it there and then will some vets wait for the payment?

Any answers much appreciated

I think its usually between 70 and 100 pounds (depending on cremation charges). Our vets have always invoiced us later for this, so would have a month or so to pay

I'd think a vet would be prepared to accept payment in installments in such circumstances. It's well worth asking.

I'm sorry to hear your dog is so ill.

we paid £45 a couple of weeks ago (). We just had the injection and brought her home and buried her (we have a big garden).

Friends said they had to pay £65 a few years ago - so it varies.

It will obviously cost more if they have to deal with cremation etc.

Vets may well have an option to pay in installments - probably worth asking. An alternative may be a charity (blue cross ?) - not sure - sorry.

We've known our girl has cancer for a little while so I've been 'saving up' for the costs (we have pet insurance which has covered the rest of her treatment) but the time has come now I think, and though I know money should be the last thing on my mind I can't help worrying about it too

mine was 12.5 - she wasn't ill - but suddenly went down hill rapidly over 2 days - we didn't really have time to think about it .

The vet did say they could send us the bill rather than paying straight away - but I just wanted to get it over and done with.

It is sad when it gets to the end - but you have to remember all the past - I am sure you have lots of good memories.

i think that we paid extra to have our dog cremated on his own and to have the ashes returned to us so we could bury him in the garden.Maybe about £80

Where I work we charge £45 to put to sleep and the cat to be sent to cremate - this will not have ashes returning to you however. We will usually wait for payment no problem. If however you want ashes returned, then the costs are split between us and the crematorium, and are more - about £30 for our part and approx £100 for the crematorium for a cat. You need to pay the crematorium before they will release the ashes back to the surgery for collection however.
Policy may vary between practices and different crematoria. I would suggest you call your surgery and talk to them about it so there are no surprises on the day.

Sorry - just read your post again - your dog obviously, not your cat.

The costs will vary according to size of the dog.
My labrador was about £160 for crematorium costs for an individual cremation earlier this year. Vet fees would be from £30-60 where I work for the euthanasia part.

Check your insurance policy...mine paid out to cover euthanasia and cremation costs. We did not have the dog returned to us...not sure if policy would have stretched to that.

just wanted to add ,that we too had to pay the vet to come out and put our dog to sleep,this was beside the money we paid for the cremation and having his ashes back.

I was quoted about £185 just for the cremation .
We burried her in the garden instead.

Thank you all so much for the replies, my girl was put to sleep last night...in fact I'm going to start another thread about it.....

But thank you all for the advice, I didn't have to pay anything at the time, in fact they seemed to think it'd be covered on the insurance? But either way at least I have time, though as I say I feel awful thinking about money at such a horrible time

Hi all, i Googled this very question this morning as i have had to take mine today. A very very sad affair, and id just like to feed back how much it has cost me. I wanted her cremating on her own and her ashes returned to me so i guess its the expensive option. But to break it down the vet charged me £95 and the crem for a solo cremation £125. And i get her ashes back. I knew it wouldn't be cheap and i cannot fault the vet in anyway, having a bloke break down in tears whilst holding his dogs head while they are trying to do what they do cant be easy. Vets i used are in rosewood, coseley. Nr Wolverhampton. Hope this helps some of you with current prices.

We didn't know our pet insurance covered it & cremation cost until we rang to say need to cancel the policy as DDog now deceased. They told us - that was Tesco insurance.

has anyone used the vetpet on balby road doncaster and i know its an awful thing to ask but does anyone know how much it is to have a dog put to sleep as my 15year old dog is ready

So sorry about your dog - I lost my 16 year old dog baby a few months ago.
She passed at home ( in the morning before she was due to be out to sleep in the PM) so I just paid for cremation and an urn. It cost about £170 ( but I did choose individual cremation and a brass heart personalised urn).

ON Friday i paid £145.00 to get my dog put to Sleep with West mount vets Asperly huddersfield.Even though i was told over phone it was going to be £143.10p.I rang yesterday monday the 05th feb 2017.to find out had she been cremated yet.and they said yes.i could pick the ashes up tomorrow.i did not ask for tge ashes back.The person i spoke to a vet called Mark has not a clue.Dont take your dog to this vet.The service i Have received from this company is Disgracefull for the money we paid.

I paid £103.33 (well they let me off the £3.33) for my rottweiler to be put down in 2013, don't know what the cost would be by now. From what others have said on this thread it looks like I was ripped off but it was my first ever dog so I had nothing to compare it with

I have had to put down 3 of my dogs, one had cancer, but she went paralysed from it and we tried to help her as much as we could by making her a wheelchair but one morning we woke up and blood was coming out of her and we just couldn’t put her through it any longer, another had a seizure and it sent him brain damaged, and another was 22 years old, he was deaf and blind with no teeth so couldn’t eat :( think it costs us about £70 each time to put them down and we had them spread cremated and spread in the back garden

Hi out dog was sick for a few days and total vet cost is 386 pounds but that includes cremation and decorative wooden box which we didn’t ask for. Just be clear what you want. The injection itself was very cheap (£10 I think). 😪
