Pup in pain - help please!

We have a 4 month old lab puppy who is normally a total boisterous lab. She suddenly seemed to sit down earlier and whimpered a little and it seemed her heart was beating fast. She wouldn't move - even for food. We examined her as best we could but couldn't find anything obvious. It seems to be her back right leg causing the problem. She did finally eat but won;t come for any treats. She went into garden for a poo and then hid in bushes. DH got her out and we got her into her basket and she slept for a while. She is now up and awake but obv not happy. Very sad and obv in pain. We have no idea what has caused this. Any ideas? Any suggestions?

Vet asap,puppies are like babies they can deteriorate quickly,she may have been stung or bitten but if she is in pain then I would say get a professional opinion

Aargh. Am in Budapest. Texted my vet who does housecalls and she cant come and said she would see her tomorrow. She didn;t seem overly worried. Don't even know where the nearest vet is.

does it seem to be tummy trouble? as a lab it's quite possible she's eaten soemthing she shouldn't have. In the meantime, don't feed her, just make sure she drinks plenty.

Doesn't seem to be tummy DID. She is limping - seems to be back right leg. We wondered if it was a wasp sting. She seems to be afraid to walk on it.

have you checked her claws? another possibility is she tried jumping onto the sofa and missed and came down with a thump, so possible strain?

Have checked claws. Found nothing. She hadn't jumped up on anything. We were in the garden with her. She seems a bit brighter now. Is chewing on a dentistix think we were trying to tempt her with earlier. DS just lay on the floor with her for a few mins and cuddle her. Seemed to help!

could just be one of those things. When my border collie was a pup, she injured her shoulder. She did play it up a bit- drama queen that she is.
hope it isn't anything serious and you never know- she could be the first person to welcome the vet

Thanks DifID. She is still limping and seems to be struggling to get into a sitting position. But she has gotten across the room to where we were sitting. Will see how she is in an hour or so.

My lab pup suddenly had leg pain with no obvious cause for injury. Turns out it is hip displasia with apparently is really common in labs.

Maybe she has just sprained it. Was she running around>

Is she insured?

Oh God sb6699. Hip displasia. It could be. It seems to be worse when she is moving position. Damn.

No diffID. We are in Hungary. Things not so easy here.

Sorry Buda , didnt mean to alarm you. It could be many things, probably something minor.

Not sure if hip displasia would come on in seconds. My pup was running around and just suddenly yelped. Didnt see anything wrong at the time so assumed he had stood on something. Pain started later on that evening.

Do you have a good pet shop. You can buy powder called Joint Aid which is really good for muscle/joint injuries. We have been using it for our pups displasia and it really works (the vet wont do anything for him until he's fully grown in case it corrects itself).

HD doesn't come on suddenly like that. It sounds much more likely that she's suddenly strained it.
We have two golden retrievers and when they were pups we were in the vets every month with some kind of strain/muscle pull.
It is a common prob with big dogs, their joints are growing quickly and they are prone to strains.
I would encourage her to rest, no walk etc. and get to vet as early as poss tomorrow where they will give her a painkiller injection and some anti-inflammatories.

Don't worry sb6699 (you sound like a James Bond type with a name like that!) - it is worth thinking about. I do think it is more a strain.

She is much the same this morning. DH apparently carried her to her food and carried her for a wee. Took her for a poo but she hasn't done one. Then he carried her back to her basket. She is lying quietly in her basket at the moment.

I had to come down in the night as I had woken up with a really bad sore throat and she jumped up in her crate and whinged a bit. Quietened down once I went back upstairs though.

I have never taken her in the car before so am hoping vet can come here this morning. DH has to go to work unfortunately. My other option is that the girl who take her when we go away is a vet's assistant and will maybe be able to take her to the vet she works for.

Will keep you posted.

Well - took her to vet and she is OK. Some kind of strain. Had an anti-inflammatory jab and have been given some calcium and vit tabs. She has to go back on Monday for another jab.

They were very nice and spoke English. I had asked my next-door neighbour who she uses and she called them for me to see if they spoke English and they were expecting us.

Car journey was ok bar the smelly farts! Poor DS was in the back with her cuddling her. She is now sleeping peacefully.

great news. The only dfficulty now is getting her to stay calm(ish) until she's healed. I'm glad it isn't anything worse

Not great news now. She seemed to be considerably worse over the afternoon and the vet we usually use was booked to come and give her a rabies jab anyway and when she came over she checked her thoroughly and reckons there is something serious going on and both hips are involved. Or maybe her pelvis.

We are taking her to the Vetinary University tomorrow for examination and xray and possible surgery. Still have no idea what happened but suspect she may have fallen from a ledge in the garden.

We have very slippery floor tiles in the house which she is struggling on so we are carrying her everywhere. DH carried her out into the garden this evening and she was not nearly as bad as she is in the house. She has had a painkiller and is sleeping. I suspect DH will be taking her upstairs to sleep tonight.

Added buggeration is that we are going to Dublin tomorrow for the weekend for my Dad's 70th. Thankfully the dog-sitter used to work for a vet and is much more experienced with dogs than we are so we are hopeful that it will be ok. Vet also warned us that the vet at the university may well decide to keep her there for a few days.

Poor wee doggie.

Update. 2 fractures

Poor wee thing. She is MUCH better today though. Took her to a vet at the university here and she was xrayed. One hairline fracture on hip which will heal itself and should be ok. Other fracture is pubic bone. Will also heal itself and will only likely cause problems if she has puppies which we were not planning (although DS was!). She would need a c-section if she were to give birth.

We still have no idea what happened although there is a wall that she can get to that has a long drop at one bit and we suspect she fell or jumped off that.

She was really good at the vet. Very interested in all the other dogs.

Dog sitter coming to pick her up in a few hours as we fly to Dublin tonight. Thankfully dog sitter used to work for a vet and has lots of experience with nursing dogs. She is to be kept quiet for next 2/3 weeks.

Thanks diffID. We got back on Sunday night and got her back yesterday evening. She is much better. Moving around well. She is not jumping up as that obv hurts but that is about the only thing you would notice.

School is back here today so she will have a quiet time anyway.
