How will I know if my guinea pig's pregnant?

Bought at local store and advised they were bout 9 wks old.
Follow up appt with vet said they can get pregnant from 4 weeks old and breeders don't do it after 9-10 wks old!
Unconvinced that they were separated??
Bought two girls at same time from same place and they came from the same breeder.
One, sandy colour, is getting 'quite fat' and the other is slim-line tri-colour.
Any advice? I know gestation is between 59-72 days. Got them 9th May. Another couple of weeks to go???

well i have two piggies but both boys however one is naturally fatter than t'other, do you have any reason to suspect they been in contact with boy ones? i spose you will have to wait and see, but if she is pg, you will have a bit of a prob on your hands im guessing and the local store would be obligated to pay for expenses and re-home babies...

it will becme very obvious if 1 is pregnant as the almost get as wide as they are long and you will see the babies moving

Cool! I'll keep you posted. Maybe she just loves food? We'll see...
Store have already said they'll lend me an indoor cage etc free of charge and vets bills will be paid for if needed.

you cant really ask for more than that and you could sell the babies back on to them lol

Starshaker... do I detect a little 'piggy' entrepreneur in you? I hadn't even thought of that... but then again, dd has her heart set on keeping them all!

We got a 9 week old girl, a month later we found 2 babies in her hutch. We had noticed she was getting bigger but she was still quite small so it wasn't totally obvious.

The next year when we bred her on purpose and she was full size and had 5 babies, then she was HUGE.

Can you hold her to your ear and listen for any meep-meeps coming from her tummy?

I love baby guinea pigs. Makes me want to get another one just thinking about them

We never knew our guinea pig was pregnant, we just got up one morning and she had one tiny baby!

Another guinea pig though which we bred, she was about as wide as she was long when she was pg, it was very cute. Like a little lightbulb shape. She had 3 and was bigger.

They aren't born naked, which is rare for rodents, they are fully furred and eyes open, and you can cuddle them from a day old or so. We enjoyed our unexpected babies so much we had two more litters.

But be warned, the male babies can impregnate their mother at 3 weeks old or so , so don't let them hang around in there too long.

Cos she will phone up and order a cheese and tomato pizza with toppings of pickled eggs and coal in the middle of the night...and she may burst into tears at the slightest thing!!

nope... no meep-meeps... just her little ticker going ten to the dozen! maybe they not big enough to meep yet???

think the vet was of the opinion that if she was she was and if she wasn't she wasn't!

i was a bunny breeder (just giving up due to new baby on the way) and i dabbled a little bit with piggys. They learn to eat from about day 1 they are hardy wee buggers lol

We had one plump, bulgy gp and one slim one. Then we had 2 bulgy ones. Then a slim one with 2 babies and a still bulgy one. Finally 2 slim ones and 5 babies. Agree with Fennel about separating boys from mums sharpish (all of ours were boys). We had teenage hutches for a while, with riotous lads roaring round playing formula 1 and spraying bedding through the bars. Brilliant. Wouldn't have done it deliberately, but wouldn't have missed it for the world.

We used to breed guinea pigs. The babies are SOOOOO cute.

Hope that they are pregnant cos GP babies are sooo much fun!

well... looks like she's just a little overweight and more greedy than the other ... no sign of any babies moving, hard belly, pear-shaped body or meep-meeps from inside her belly. Kinda gutted but not as much as her 11 year old owner, my DD.
