Incontinent GREAT dane...

I have an 8 year old spayed great dane bitch. She is becoming increasingly incontinent. Its becoming a problem. Have just came home to find cloth settee covered in shit... not a happy camper. She isn't even allowed on bloody couch.

Anyone else had an incontinent problem in a large dog that was managed well and how???

Apparently spaying can cos problems with incontinence but i thought usually urinary incontinence, anyone know more on the subject??

My parents dalmation has been having incontinent problems for about 18 months or so now. She is 11, and has never been spayed.
The advice that they were given was allowing her access to outdoors and walking/feeding her at the same time each day.
She can't walk very far now though because her back legs are not so strong, which is hard because they tell you to keep her out till she has done what she needs.
They keep the back door and conservatory doors open always when someone is in, but even at that she sometimes makes it to the back door and floods the place before getting outside. Such a shame!

bedlambeast we do walk and feed same time everyday but sometimes she is out and then comes in and a few minutes later we are knee high in shit, it seems that when she needs to go , she needs to go NOW. She has never been good at letting you know she needs out.

prammymammy thanks also, been trying to dog proof the garden as unfortunately she is a bit of an escape artist and hates the dog down the road, so she really nedds supervised in garden, not always easy with three wee ones under 4.

Actually biggest problem is when we are away. We used to take them but after accidents in car and stress to parents when staying with them with incontinent dog we now leave them at home aith doggy walker visiting 3-4 times daily. This time i came home to the couch covered in shit which is just not nice. Unforunately we have to be away one weekend a month but i am thinking now we need to rethink and maybe one of us always stay at home.

Yeah, i can imagine a great dane being able to escape easily lol. Big dog needs a huge fence.

Poor girl, i bet she is stressed out by it too, is there anyone who could look after her when you are away?

My parents had two dalmations, one died just before christmas and they are talking about getting a great dane next. Are they as destructive as people say?

prammy Our great dane pushes fences aside and can find the smallest gap to get her big meat head in and then shoves til she gets thru!!
We do have someone to walk her and spend sometime here (have two dogs btw.)with them. However whilst he can manage them out walking (needs a strong confident hand incase meets the 'enemy' from round the corner) he doesn't seem to manage the incontinence very well. SHe really needs someone with her most of the time.

Incontinence aside she is a lovely dog. For the kids she is the best dog ever, so placid and tolerant, i've never heard her growl or complain at a human EVER. If i didn't have 3 small kids taking up my time, i'd have another. And i'm obviously biased but she is GORGEOUS!!

bedlam Thanks for advise. SHe has always been a bit manky, got another bitch (collie x) and she is the cleanest dog, bum is always spotless whereas the g dane often has a dirty bum, leaves skid marks everywhere if given the chance... NOT nice, but she is lovely if you have no sense of smell. Vet suggested bran in diet but i know myself her problem is control or lack of control. Its almost like IBS. She gets the runs very easliy, can only have her food, if i even change flavour it can cos her to run.

Think its just a case of being careful, walks and meals at same time each day and always have one person at home. She is 8 and reasonably old for a dane so i doubt i have too many years of clearing up to do.

She is a poor soul altho i think it stresses the wee dog out more as she so clean. The dane is a big doughnut really and doesn't seem to mind

What age did ur dane live to (presuming he no longer around with the 'was' chat). our girl getting quite stiff now and struggles to crouch for a pee sometimes (altho she can vault a 4ft fence if enemy dog passing by)
