We take our hamster away with us in this country - is it ok to take our hamster abroad? Do we need to get a passport from the hamster?

They prefer to fly apparently.

MichelleObama · 26/05/2009 14:32

Have you got one of these?

random · 26/05/2009 14:33

looking cool

Ivykaty44 · 26/05/2009 14:36

I got him one of these

But we are not sure what they will say at customs - should we just sneal through or declare him?

Well, as I understand it, no animal can leave the country without vaccinations and a pet passport - even if they are driving themselves

Madmentalbint · 26/05/2009 14:40

Pets at Home do a lovely range of hamster suncreams. They aren't too greasy but you have to remember to re-apply after swimming.

Have fun!

random · 26/05/2009 14:41

on a motorbike?

noddyholder · 26/05/2009 14:42

That is so cute

random · 26/05/2009 14:44

having fun

Ivykaty44 · 26/05/2009 14:45

So where do I apply for the passport and what injection do a male hamster need.

At the moment he is off sunning himself in Cirenster and lapping up some polo, my dd was insistent he went away with her on holiday and he was so good on the trip there that she wants him to come with us in the summer

RustyBear · 26/05/2009 14:46

Depends where you're going. Rules for rabbits and rodents

Apparently, if you're taking him to see the Pope, you're OK...

Ivykaty44 · 26/05/2009 14:50

ahh -thanks rustybear, no the hamster is agnostic

I googled taking hamster abroad and this thread is the fourth link!

Seriously, I think you should check it out as I am not sure you can just take him abroad.

Ivykaty44 · 26/05/2009 20:23

Well looking into this and it seems I can but I have to get a lot of forms and stuff.

What can I do, he will miss us, dogs go to kennels do they have similar for hamsters?

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 26/05/2009 20:27

yes me

blonde has many hammies to stay

i only have males and it drives them mad insane with passion when they can smell a female

coz females do stink

seriously though, most vets and pet shops will happily take your hammy for a week or two

havent you eveer seen a hammy in a cage in the pet shop with a sign saying hamster NOT for sale

Ivykaty44 · 26/05/2009 20:30

Will hammy feel sad, if we go away without him - will he miss us.

Can he come and stay with you Blonde?

OP posts:
FabulousBakerGirl · 26/05/2009 20:32

Where are you? I will hamster sit if blonde can't help.

Ivykaty44 · 26/05/2009 20:35

Ah baker thats sweet, we are in the middle.

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 26/05/2009 20:42

if you are near me, then i would LOVE to have your hammy

im in kent

he wont miss YOU but if he is a sociable creature he will miss not being taken out/played with etc

but hammies are thick

and they will be fine if ignored for a week or two then LOVE you even more when you come back

though our hammies sulk if we go out for evening, let alone if we stay the night away

and we come back and they are in far corner with their backs turned to us

Ivykaty44 · 29/05/2009 22:17

Oh thats so nice - but we are near Birmingham. I am sure he would love to have stayed with oyu

Hammy loved his camping trip anyway and had lots of fresh air and was really good on the trip there and back.
