My puppy has had his last injection...advice needed!

Ok, the vet has said we shouldn't take him out for ANOTHER 2 WEEKS!!!!! I think I might go mental! Well, perhaps not, but I would like to get him out for walks asap! I thought it was only 5-7 days until you could take them out? Is it just my vet, or is this the norm now? Can I take him out? I don't want to do anything silly and expose him to nasties that he won't be immune to yet. But, it would be nice to take him out with us at the weekend and not to be tied to the house for another weekend!!

Your vet is right, and will be basing this advice on the particular vaccine he/she has used.

Tempting as it is, just not worth the risk taking them out at this stage IMO.

bargainhuntingbetty · 12/05/2009 13:49

Never heard of it being 2 weeks but if that is your vets advice I woul take it. You dont want your little puppy getting sick. Is it a small puppy?? I used to put my puppy in my back pack andd take it out with me, it wasnt on the ground but it was exposed to the big wide world.

Ours told us 2 weeks. They really shouted at DH was well, after pup had his last lot of injections, I was paying and DH took him out to the car. he put pup down on teh gorund for a minute to open the boot and one of the nurses really shouted at him about not putting the dog down where other dogs could be.

KingCanuteIAm · 12/05/2009 13:56

Weird, I was advised something totally different, perhaps they use a different vaccine or something? Anyway, as has been said if this is the advice it is best to follow it. If nothing else, should anything happen, you will invalidate your insurance - even if it is not vaccination related IYSWIM.

bella29 · 12/05/2009 13:57

It was 2 weeks for the vaccine my lab pup had last summer.

KingCanuteIAm · 12/05/2009 14:02

I don't want to say what we were told a few weeks ago as I don't want the op to take risks because of it IYSWIM. Suffice to say it was not that

bella29 · 12/05/2009 14:03

Different vets use different vaccines, KC.

The OP should follow their vet's advice

KingCanuteIAm · 12/05/2009 14:05

That's what I said

AliBean · 12/05/2009 14:07

My friend is a vet and said it was ok to take our pup to the beach at low tide if we were desperate for a walk...

She said to carry the dog down to the "clean sand" and let her have a mooch about. TBH they are too little to walk far...

Anyway we did this in the last few days of "house arrest" and our pup was fine and still loves going to the beach best of all

hatwoman · 12/05/2009 14:07

iirc we were told differently - however (also iirc) I think vets give specific advice dependent on current risks - ie the actual risk in your area at the particular time. so it could be that there's been a lot of recent cases and the risk is high.

do you know any other dogs? could you ask the vet if it's ok for him to meet other vaccinated dogs at home.

bella29 · 12/05/2009 14:08

I know - I wasn't arguing, merely backing you up, and trying to explain why the OP has been given different advice to some other people. I fully appreciated why you didn't repeat what you were told in the first place.

Am a bit too busy burying my dead hammie and working out how to tell my dc's that their second pet has died in 2 weeks right now to get stroppy, honest

hatwoman · 12/05/2009 14:08

oh and totally agree with bella - follow the advice, not us

bella29 · 12/05/2009 14:09

That last post was meant for KC - may not have made sense otherwise

bella29 · 12/05/2009 14:09

lol - was jsut about to agree with you hatwoman about vets knowing local risk e.g. parvo outbreaks.

KingCanuteIAm · 12/05/2009 14:10

Ahh, I see, I was answering carefully as I couldn't quite work out if you were arguing or agreeing

Sorry about hammy

bella29 · 12/05/2009 14:11

Thanks

Right, off to do something useful.

Best of luck with your lovely pup, OP.

mum2seb · 12/05/2009 21:28

Thankyou! Sorry to have started such a heated debate!! He's a very lively pup, and just doesn't much like being carried around - he wants to be out exploring - but I think he's just going to have to wait!

Lol, not a heated debate, I love Bella - I am going to name my next puppy after her

Good luck with your pup Mum2Seb, I am expecting regular updates - with photos

bella29 · 13/05/2009 08:50

True - KC is going to be posting regularly about Bella pooing on the floor, weeing in the hall, crying all night
