My hammie has died

bella29 · 11/05/2009 21:26

My hammie would have been 3 in August but had been looking pretty old lately, and yesterday when I cleaned him out he seemed very slow to wake up.

dd and I fed him some hammy porridge and he seemed okay.

Put some treats in for him this morning and he didn't wake but I checked he was breathing.

Then this evening I put some Tesco Finest Purple Sprouting Broccoli in for him and he didn't wake up. Poor hammie has died.

Haven't told dd and ds yet as we also lost a cat just 2 weeks ago, so they must think everything is going to die now

RIP hammie

So sorry - although they are little they contribute alot.

We lost our little Russian Hamster as couple of months ago. We got her from the RSPCA just before Christmas 2006 and she wasn't a baby then!!!!! She lasted 3 Christmases with us which was lovely. She used to love to watch me MN on the computer.

Thank you both.

He was lovely and I know he lived a long time for a hamster, but it's still sad.

Oh bless him. The tears are welling up here. And to think he missed his purple sprouting broccoli (Tesco Finest, no less) too. Poor little chap.

Will you have a proper funeral? .

madlentileater · 11/05/2009 21:47

DD1 is here she feels your pain...tis all sad...but in the end...life's rich tapestry etc..

ingles2 · 11/05/2009 21:56

awww
RIP hammie

bella29 · 11/05/2009 21:58

I know. And I thought he'd really enjoy the broccoli.

Got it as a special treat for dd who loves purple and loves broccoli so you'd think...but no, she didn't want any either.

Will have to tell the dc's tomorrow.

I think a funeral is required but I also have 2 dogs who love to dig

But it does sound like he had a happy life.

bella29 · 11/05/2009 22:02

Thanks, fruitbat.

so sorry to hear about hammy

least he had his yummy porridge

will you get another hammy?

MUM23ASD · 12/05/2009 15:53

bella....

quickdrawmcgraw · 12/05/2009 15:59

aw poor thing.
Our hamster died not so long ago and to stop him being dug up by the dog i put his body in a zip lock freezer bag and then in a cardboard box, then buried him and put a plank across and a rock on top. Extreme but it would have be too awful if he'd been dug up.

bella29 · 12/05/2009 17:20

Thanks for all the sympathies.

dd was upset but is okay now. ds was distraught and still very quiet. dh is keeping him amused. Telling dc's is the worst part, definitely.

Blondie - yes, hammie porridge seems to be a popular last meal

Don't think we'll get another, at least not at the mo. tbh the dc's saw very little of him and it was only me who looked after him. I got my first hammie when I was 10 (it was the only pet my mother forbade, so my best friend bought me one on the assumption that my mum wouldn't be cross - wrong!). She (the hammie) was pregnant when I got her so had twelve surprise babies (imagine my delight!) and I had them all through my younger years. I persuaded ds he wanted a hammie 3 years ago so I could get one but will wait a while before I get another.

Thanks again, all.

So sorry.

I cried buckets in the vets when mine had to be put down.

Soppy things, us mummy's.
