Friends dog

Friend has a dog, she's 8yo I think. Lab x something or other.

She's kept in a small cupboard all day, let out when she woofs that she needs the toilet! Cupboard has no door on but a stairgate confining her there.

Dog isn't allowed in the back garden cos friend has chickens, geese, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs, parrots etc etc outside, some in cages, some wondering about and dog chases them.

I don't like the conditions the dog is being kept in, would this be right to report?! The dog is being fed & watered but no walks, attention.

Friend just says the dog is stupid & hyper. Dog is hyper cos dog wants excercise ... Dog is certainly not stupid ..

I feel very very stupid to have to ask but I really don't know ..

Sounds not good to me . You could ring RSPCA/SSPCA and ask them. They might do a home visit and see what they think. (There's another job option for you- RSPCA/ SSPCA inspector! but quite oversubscribed, I believe..)

Greensneeze · 07/05/2009 00:18

Could you talk to your friend about it and tell her you're concerned? Would she be able to take that from you?

I don't know about reporting her, depends on you and her really - but I don't like the sound of the conditions the dog is living in at all

Claire2009 · 07/05/2009 00:21

When she said dog was hyper & stupid I did say, dog needs a walk. I'd love to do it if I had the time but I don't & I just feel terrible for dog being in a cupboard all day (well except for the 10mins toilet'ing).

I'm giving Defra a call tomorrow regarding a dog in France so will call Rspca tomorrow and see what they say.

I was just thinking, dog (not sure if its a he/she) was fed/watered then perhaps they wouldn't be too bothered. I can't see her ever walking dog, I've never seen dog out for a walk.

No, under recent law an animal needs to have its "5 freedoms", one of which is the right to exhibit its normal behaviour- check out no 4 re space5 freedoms

Claire2009 · 07/05/2009 00:31

Thanks jjj, 4 & 5 are relevant here. Will call Rspca tomorrow even if they speak with her about better care its something?!

Yeah, hopefully she might realise the poor dog's situation needs to improve. You are going to be busy tomorrow making all these calls- go girl!

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/05/2009 09:03

OMG locked in a small cupboard all day and not allowed out

thats awful and def animal cruelty!!

you need to ring rspca TODAY and tell them

why on earth does your friend keep a dog and not have the poor thing rehomed and given to a family who will love and care for it as pets should be

daisybaby · 07/05/2009 09:17

Oh, the poor animal. I hope you manage to help the situation. Good luck.

bella29 · 07/05/2009 10:15

Very sad

Please report it.

Doodle2U · 07/05/2009 10:20

Report that dog behind your friend's back and you can kiss that friendship goodbye. From what you've said, your friend is a gawp, so maybe no loss. However, if she is someone you want to be friends with, going straight to the RSPCA isn't the immediate answer.

TALK to her. Tell her what you think. Offer to help her re-home. Suggest that you ring RSPCA together, for re-homing advice etc.

If she still doesn't get it, then you'll know she is a complete twit. Report her and go in search of friends with a smidge more nowse.

Doodle2U · 07/05/2009 10:21

nouse?

How do you spell that?

1MitchellMum · 07/05/2009 13:20

Nous.

Gaelic for wisdom.

May also be worth a call to the dog warden?

Claire2009 · 07/05/2009 13:22

I've reported it.

Done it anon, she has enough people in/out of her house each week it could be anyone reporting it anyway.

Rspca are calling out today sometime.

Well done. Right thing to do.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/05/2009 13:55

glad you reported

Joolyjoolyjoo · 07/05/2009 14:02

I think you did the right thing. They wouldn't call out if they didn't think there was any point to it, and they won't go in guns blazing- they'll probably just have a chat to your friend about how she can improve the dog's conditions

junglist1 · 08/05/2009 14:32

Well done OP, if only everyone was like you animals would suffer a lot less. Let us know if you hear anything

daisybaby · 08/05/2009 16:05

So glad you reported it - any news?
