a cat and travelling/moving

So here is the thing - I´ve been longing for a cat for a while (would love a dog as well, but at the moment it would be selfish as I´m out at work for big part of day) and as I´m having a surgery with 6 weeks sick leave in December, I decided that finally the timing is right, as I can look after the kitten full-time, litter train it etc. After that back to work and hopefully the cat will be ok without me being there all the time. (?)(actually another question as I only used to have outdoor cats so not really experienced with home ones - are they ok by themselves for half a day, do they entertain themselves or is it better to get two of them for company?)
Then around May I would like to move to the UK and bring the cat with me. Does someone have experience with that? Is it generally ok, or very stressful for a cat? And how about the journey (plane, drive..), is it manageable?
Another thing, once in a while I would like to be coming back to my country and I´m wondering whether it is a good idea to take the cat with me (if longer trip = worth it) or better have someone look after it for me.
I realize these might be silly questions as I´m really inexperienced when it comes to having a pet with my life being a bit of chaos sometimes - I´ve had pets for most of my life, but then it was in a house with big garden all the time. So I wonder if it is wise to even consider having a pet, or if I have to give up this idea and wait til I settle down (if ever!)..
Thank you for replies and your experience with cats and travelling/moving

It would be much better to have two kittens, preferably two from the same litter who have already paired off.

They differ so much in temperament I can't advise on the move to the UK. Some I've had could have coped but wouldn't have enjoyed it. Others would have been wretchedly miserable. How long would the journey be?

And for trips home I think it would be kinder to find a cat sitter.
