Should I get another rabbit?

We had 2 female rabbits which we got when they were babies. Unfortunately one died a few months ago, and I'm wondering whether the other one would benefit from some companionship. She is 3 years old now, is that too old to introduce another rabbit? Or is she fine on her own? She is kept outside in a hutch and is on her own a lot. Any advice welcome!

Thanks.

she'll prob be ok on her own. if you do get another one you'll need to make sure they're both spayed/neutered otherwise they might fight and you would need to introduce them gradually. ie, in hutches/runs next to each other for some time until you are sure they're happy to be near each other.
personally I'd save myself the hassle and just keep her by herself though

I wouldn't get another. If you make sure the remaining rabbit has plenty of stimulation and attention I would think she'd be fine. We gave ours a black and white football and that keeps her busy for hours.

What about some toys and a cuddly toy rabbit?

I've just been watching her on her own and felt sorry for her! I like the football and toys ideas, I'll give them a try.

Our rabbit spends long spells inside.

She has a cat litter tray that she poops in and just potters about, hiding and skidding on the wooden floor.

But she's got people round her a bit more when she can come inside. Could you do that with your rabbit?

tessieb · 25/04/2009 19:42

No, I wouldn't want her inside. I'm allergic to cats, had problems with a friend's hamster years ago and don't think I'd cope well with a furry pet in the house. When we were looking for pets years ago I decided that whatever we got would have to live outside.

yes my lone rabbit liked a football and a cuddly toy rabbit friend too.
he also had a nice big tube in his run to go through- local carpet shop might be able to give you one

I've just phoned a local animal rescue charity and they have a neutered male rabbit waiting for a home. Apparently he is a little shy but has a nice temperament. I'm off to see him later on today, then will see if my rabbit likes him!

I have to get a new hutch. I've been looking for one anyway as my current hutch is getting a little worse for wear. Also it's too small. I need a hutch that is 6' long and 2' wide, preferably with a run underneath it, and preferably not too expensive! I've been looking online and so many of them are just too small. Does anyone have any recommendations?
