My Dog has started to chew everything

Hi My pup is 7 months old and has just started to chew thing, shoes, baby toys, teddied etc. She has her own toys which she has had snce we got her. Do you think she could be bored with these and wanting new ones or is it just a stage.

At a loss as to what top do she has also eaten/chewed, our abmbo fencing in the garden and some green material fencing .

I am sorry to say but its a stage they go through my pup is now 11 onths and he loves to chew i have given him an old shoe and always give him chews bones etc. He is not a big chewer so its not to bad.

We have a big cage he sleeps in its his bed and he loves it and has done since day 1 do you have one?

I put him in the kitchen with a baby gate up when i go out with his toys and bedding and he sleeps in his cage at night. He does chew but i am mostly with him when he is lose in the house so i can stop him.

I would just tell your pup its bad and give him a shoe,old teddy, chews toys etc etc.

What kind of pup have you got?

Some dogs definitely do this mor ethan others. Our lab went through a three piece suite, our carpet and even a framed picture - how she didn't cut he rmouth to ribbons is a mystery. Our table and chairs still have teeth marks in them. I'm afraid there is little that you can do really, other than give them plenty of things to chew - IME soft toys last five minutes and most chews are either gone in seconds or aren't safe to be left if you aren't around - you need to look for really sturdy dog toys, or those cubes that you can hide treats in. They do grow out of it though - remember dogs teethe - they lose their baby teeth like humans. Second the idea of finding a space that your pup feels happy to be confined in when you aren't around.

Try a nice big juicy bone from the butchers - she'll love it and it will occupy her for a long time if she's anything like mine - she can chew it outside if you're worried about raw meat on your any of your floors - don't give her cooked bones though, they'll splinter.

Good advice on here already, but not so sure about the old shoe myself - she might find it difficult to distinguish between an old shoe and one that's still in use....?

My dog ate several pairs of my shoes - my dp used to feed him my shoes that he didn't like!

Hi all thanks for your replies.

She did have a cusion for her bed but she ripped this up. She is a large dog an American Akits. All her adult teeth are through she never did this whilst teething. In our garden we have a big run for her (6m*10m) we are buolding a shaded bit for her there. She is put in here as her kennel is in there for shade also, but she keeps finding spots to escape so need to secure some more the fencing is the wire cross kind 6ft. She gets bored with the bones and I end up throwing them out as she leaves them then they attract all the flies and other insects. All her chews (which she has had from when we gother) are still in working order as they are all durable, but thiink I will go and get her more. I think as well at the moment the heat is just kicking in and it will take her time to get used to it at the mo it is mid to late 20's will be hitting 40-50 within the next 6 weeks.

My lab went through her bed, too, in the end we bought her a really tough plastic basket and filled it with blankets from a charity shop. Every couple of weeks we just got a new one, they're only about 30p each.

Sounds like she has a lot of excess energy - does she get much off lead excercise? If my dog doesn't get at least a hour a day he drives me mad.

Charleypops- we have been told by the breeder and other breeders not to walk her to much -she gets a 20 mins walk a day and this tires her by the time you get back. The breed do not need a lot of exercise even though they are big dogs. Also Akitas can not /should not be aloud of the lead when walking out as they (no matter how well trained) will try and domineer any thing when outside there family home.

I think we will just have to keep everything out of her way and persevere. My measurements of the run were wrong sorry it is about 4m*6m. I got a bit carried away typing I think.

have you tried a kong? its a virtually indestructible (she says!) toy that you put food in and it occupys them for ages trying to get it out!!! A crate also might be a good idea. I got one really cheap off ebay.
