can a microchip 'disappear'? - lost cat!

Help!
I lost one of my cats about a year ago. I have just found out tonight that a cat matching her description has been living at a house round the corner for several months and that they have just taken her into a re-homing centre.

I have called the centre and spoke to a particularly unhelpful woman who made it clear that she was on her way out and didn't have the time to talk to me, but what I did manage to find out was that they have scanned this cat that's been brought in, and it isn't microchipped (mine are all microchipped)
I have told them I want to go and see her anyway just in case, but it will have to be tommorow morning.
Just wondering if there is a small glimmer of hope that she might be mine... just seems too much of a coincidence.

Mum's dog's tags have moved from round the back of their neck to their shoulder - almost the top of her leg so yes, it is possible

I feel sure it is her. the woman on the phone didn't exactly instill me with confidence.

Yes they can 'migrate' in dogs and cats.

My cats micrchip dissapeared the day before we were all due to fly back to the uk from germany! it had slipped to right under her shoulder blade, it took 4 vets to find it.

Like everyone says, they can move, but i don't know about them disappearing. My mums dog had hers in her neck and it was in her front let a few years ago, could be anywhere now lol.
