any help/info rehoming dog :(

unfirtunately thro no great sin of hers I need to find a new home for my greyhound bitch.
shes sucha sweetheart I feel absolutely awful, but shes not a happy bunny here and its only going to get worse. she is a retired exracing dog,(age 4) and we are her first ever real home. she is very scared all the time, and still depressed after six months in my noisy busy household.
After some discussion with the rescue that put us together they agree our busy family isnt the best place for her. however they are unable (unwilling?) to help rehome her, and i have no idea what to do next.
she really needs to be in a quiet or more grown up household, (i have a toddler!) she loves my biggest kid but is very nervous and unhappy around the smallest. that aside shes the sweetest natured dog going and means very well once she realises you ARENT going to beat her (crap early life she had) and arent shouting at her. she is fawn and has greeny eyes, making her gorgeous. shes house trained and spayed. the more depressed she gets the more i get.....
has anyone rehomed a dog before? can anyone tell me the next step to take? i dont know about advertising her, as worried it may attract the 'wrong' type iykwim.

Where abouts are you? my dp's family have taken an ex-racer before and have a couple of lurcher x's that gypsy have dumped on their land.

I'm not sure why they would have rehomed an ex-racer in a family with a toddler in the first place really. Such a shame but they take quite a while to adapt.

I'm in southampton. I do understand how long they take to settle totally. but i cant risk her nerves around a toddler, esp a toddler whos getting more and more active. It making ME worried, and making the dog miserable....I thought the dog would be okay, and apparently they usually are with toddlers, its just i think ours is a more severe insecure/nervous case. bless her.

Oh then we're too far away so can't help sorry.

I didn't think they normally rehomed them with young children but I'm not expert so could be wrong.

Sorry couldn't help, hope you find somewhere that will take her. Try calling the vets they might be able to put you in touch with someone, or, I think there is a greyhound protection thing-y. Again the vet will probably be able to help you out there especially if you explain the situation.

Hopefulyl someone else on here will be able to help

I would love her but our 3 yo would torment her so it wouldn't be fair if she's already nervous.

There was a greyhound shelter thing advertised in Andover the other week and they had loads of dogs in town to try and encourage people to take them - if you want i'll try and find out where they are - or is that still too far?

If it is dp works in Southampton so could maybe bring her up for you if need be.....

thanks for response, I feel very bad but we have decided we have to find her a better home, as we are only making each other miserable together.
andover rescue? not heard of that, guess if i could 'choose' i would want a 'home' for her rather than kenneling so i will try and find a way to get her one first. but thanks for the offer. (does you dp know you offered to have him put a big furry greyhound in his car from work?)
I will call my vets i think..
is advertising her the only other way then? and how would i stop all the gypsies arriving....

swiper, funnily enough, thats where i got her thro! they dont ahve any kennels of their own, they simply go to the trainers and see whos at the end of their useful race life and then find homes for them.

Thats the thing- if you gave her to a specific greyhound rescue - not just a dogs home,they would find a suitable place for her, do home checks etc- if you advertise her yourself,then you dont know where they're going unless you do a homecheck yourself (I'm sure if they wanted the best for a dog they wouldnt mind you doing it)

Hi DQ, I doubt very much gypsies will be interested in her, she'll be too old for hare coursing (I think).

They tend to dump them once they've lost their edge (hance dp's mum having had a few).

I'm sure they're must be another way than advertising. I thought there was a national organisation - will ask dp to call his mum. She'll probably know.

thanks TVI, I hope she can come up with an idea for us, the greyhound rescue (as linked below) were understanding but said basically, what can they do?, funny as i had an option to return her after just 2 wks here, (how on earth can you see if they are the right dog in 2wks?! she was still shaking and hiding under the table then) but seems no great help being offered now...

Have you tried the National canine defence League?
They re home all breeds and do a full check befor placing a dog. They are national and would be able to help.

DH has just told me they are now called The Dogs trust.
