training the cat to 'go' outside

we got a cat from our local rescue centre. She'd never been outside in her previous home and had to stay in for a few weeks with us. Recently we've been letting her out in the day but bringing her in at night as the rescue centre suggested.

I'd like her to start using the garden to do her 'business' in the day but keep a litter tray for night time. How do I train her to do this without confusing her?

perhaps start by putting her cat litter train outside the back door when you are in so that you can show her where it is if she goes looking ... if she goes outside a little more she will possibly get caught short away from home or smell some nice smells that encourage her to go.
