clicker training basics

Also if anyone has any pointer and tips with regards to clicker training.

I sent loopylou6 a clicker training set that I had absolutely no luck in using for my dogs and I lost the instructions.

Oooh - can I have a peek too? I have seen it used on giraffes and elephants but not sure if my puppy is bright enough [shcok]

bella29 · 23/02/2009 12:48

LOL

the key with clicker training is timing - you have to click exactly when they do the positive thing that you want to reward - and always reward with a treat (something very small). And stick to reinforcing one thing at a time to begin with.

So click as they start to sit down - don't wait til they are sitting perfectly and looking at you expectantly.

You click & treat first, then later just click - is that right?

Actually we need two threads in the Pet section, a clicker bootcamp and a puppycage bootcamp (like Cod used to run for toilet training).

Does anyone volunteer to teach me about modern puppy training metods before my bundle arrives in the summer? pretty please?

bella29 · 23/02/2009 14:25

Marmaduke - is that a puppy bump you've got there? Tell all!

MarmadukeScarlet · 23/02/2009 14:34

Puppy bump lol yes, dates for seasons are set, stud dog at the ready, planned puppy old enough to home in June/July. [wriggles with excitement]

DH not impressed about not having a summer holiday though!

super cutie

well I was always told that you have to reward - but you can gradually stretch what they have to do to get the click.

so start off by just clicking when they look at you, then once they reliably get the idea of click and treat, go on to clicking for sitting etc. And once they are reliably doing it - then add a command to it - so don't start saying sit until they do it - otherwise they get confused and don't associate the word with the action.

Oh, Marmaduke, I am so envious

Is he going to be a Spinone?

You lucky, lucky Marmaduke!!!!

Does anyone else feel there is just not enough time left in their lives to have all the dogs they want? Just me? Okay, I can live with that!

MarmadukeScarlet · 24/02/2009 09:40

Like a Spinone but less dribbly! From the same 'group' so an HPR (hunt, point, retrieve).

It is a Slovakian Wire Haired Pointer, a breed started in Slovakia (obv!) by breeding a Weimeraner with a Slovak Duvo...something. So the same colour as a weimeraner but more sensible! Am getting a bitch and having the tail left on, as more likely to show it than work it (and I am a bit anti docking for 'pet' animals, can see why in somecases a proper working dog might need it off) as they have just become a recongised breed in the UK.

I feel the same way about having dogs as you a little, what I really want is half a dozen ex racing greyhounds but my DH sensibly won't let me have even one as he knows it will be the thin end of the wedge!

We are getting the SRHP as it is one of the few breeds we can agree on (that and a Viszla so not ruling out a future addition!) he wanted a GSD or a Malamute .

bella29 · 24/02/2009 10:32

Sounds like she'll be fab - agree with you totally re docking: I've seen some very nasty split tail injuries in working dogs but in lots of cases I don't think it's necessary.

My dh is too laid back on the dog front: it's me who needs to try to keep the numbers in check. My old girl's getting a bit too old to cope with another puppy, but I have a 'waiting list' of about 6 breeds I would like in the future

Do keep us posted, Marmaduke

Apologies to OP - will go read that clicker article now, honest!!!
