We have an American Akita called Storm she is 6 months old, black and white. She is extermely playful with DH and DD (8 yrs) but really gentle with DS (10 months) and myself.

I just wondered if there were any other Akita owners on here.

Huskygirl were on Lancashire/Yorkshire border, DH has a scooter for ours as we only have the one, but it wont be long before we have another I'm sure..lol our Boy is now 3 he too has champion breeding in him.

mothernature- here is a photo of Storm.
storm hope this works am normally rubbish at hyperlinks!!

we had a lot to think about when we were getting the dog with them being territorial (sp!!) as DH is in the Army so we have to move every 3-5 years.

We are going to go to obedience classes with her soon, just hope they don't expect me to let her of the lead as as a breed this is one thing that you really can't do with the Akita in public!! as they are likley to do a runner and if not on the lead more likely to try and dominer (sp)

Hi karen, he is lovely!

Just a thought, is that a read-only password for Photobucket? If not, just to warn you there was a problem back in Jan when lots of people were posting links and passwords to pics, someone was messing with the accounts, deleting photos, changing passwords etc.

karen01 · 11/04/2005 19:12

Thanks Jodee, this is what happened to miy account in Jan. will make it read only. Thanks for the advice.

Karen01 and mothernature your Akita and Husky are beautiful!! I would like to put a picture on here of our 3 huskies but have no idea how to even begin, our photo's are digital ones but not on a website, just in kodak pictures folder on the pc. Anyway congratulations they are both scrummy

karen01 · 12/04/2005 10:33

mothernature your Husky is gorgeous, I can't imagine Storm ever lying like that next to us on a beach with out a lead !!.

Huskygirl if you go to photobucket .com and open an account you will be able trf photos from you kodac file into it and you can do just a read only access as I have in there would love to see your dogs.

Will be taking some more of Storm soon as she has grown, she is molting at the mo so looks really scruffy bless her.

thanks karen01 i'll try it now. We never let our off the lead either, we are too scared that they'd run off and never come back, that and they completely need training anyway

Mothernature · 12/04/2005 10:40

Just to inform those of you who think you can let sibes off the lead, you can't, he was only 'off lead' when on this beach, this one was secure, he is never off lead anywhere else not even in the garden.

huskygirl · 12/04/2005 11:01

\link{http://photobucket.com\here hopefully thats worked. These are our 3 huskies. The read only password is aleska.

karen01 · 12/04/2005 11:08

Bloody hell I didn't realise that. We have sectioned of a 10meterby 6meter run dfor the dog with er kennel in it. This is all 6 foot fencing. But she onlly uses it at night time and if we are out . The rest of the time she has the whole garden and the house. Round the garden the fence is just waist/boob heightish. She puts her paws right over but hasn't attempted to jump. Apparantley Akitas don't jump, however she has jumped our stairgate to get out of the kitchen one night.

Hi
We have an Akita who will be 3 on Thursday 21st April. I am due to have a Csection on the 20th so will have a new baby and a 21 yr old(in doggie years) Akita- Joy
We really looked into the breed before we got her as were worried about the bad press they seem to get and didnt want a problem dog when we knew we wanted kids eventually. Kia our Akita is nothing like anything we read or were warned about. She is really a softie but yes is large and alot of people back away from here when they dont know her. We have a labradour aswell who is younger and our Akita mothers her like she is her own pup. They cuddle together and wash each other all the time. The Akita is very protective towards my husband and I but is fab with babies and children. She seems to know they are smaller and can get hurt so is very soft with them and puts her head down when they stroke her so they dont catch her mouth.
We have been warned they can be very, very protective towards your own children but I cannot imagine Kia ever hurting anyone at all. She does bark but only when there is a reason like a stranger outside the house ( although the postie has not become her friend yet)

jinx · 14/04/2005 14:02

One other thing, anyone thinking of getting an Akita make sure you have a good vaccum cleaner- when they moult boy do they moult!!!!
I think my dogs halved in size over the last 2 weeks {smile]

slug · 14/04/2005 14:31

My bf has two. Known and loved by the sluglet as the 'giant doggies'. They are extraordinarily tolerant of the small thing and have learnt that, when she comes to visit, that if they sit quietly at her feet she will feed them the scraps from her plate.

karen01 · 14/04/2005 20:52

JInx, which type of Akita do you have the American or the Japenese.

I know what you mean about moulting Storm is at the moment and as soon as she goae ontot he carpet we need to vacuum as all you can see is clumps of white and black fur. Bless her.
