Quick question about fish tanks

DD1 bought an aquarium and two fish with her birthday money to keep in her bedroom. She shares her bedroom with Dd2 who has been complaining that the filter keeps her awake at night. Can I turn the filter off at night or does it need to be kept on all the time? It is a cold water tank btw. TIA

I had a tank in my room as a child and always turned the filter off at night and the fish were fine.

I suppose as the filter helps keep the water clean not having it on all the time may mean that the tank needs cleaning more often.

as long as cold water fish they will be fine but NEVER forget to turn back in the morning

our pump/heater/light makes a right racket sometimes but as have tropical fish we have to have all 3 on

filters need to run 24/7 to stop the bacteria dying

Turning off the filter is a really bad idea, as Alexandra says, it keeps the good bacteria alive, it also oxygenates the water so the fish can breathe.

If it's keeping her awake might it be more appropriate to move the tank into a room downstairs?
