I know it is the right thing for him. He's a border collie and we can't give him what he needs. He is awful around DS (10 mo). DH is devastated and I feel terrible for this as it was at my insistence that he be rehomed. Feeling very

you poor things

Has he gone somewhere you can hear about him?

MadameCheese · 02/02/2009 11:31

Thank you WEE. Yes he has gone to a friend of a friend. I'm sure he'll be much happier with her and get the stimulation he needs.

Sounds like you have done the right thing. Border collies do need lots of stimulation. Big, difficult decision but much better for the dog in these cases. Well done & don't give yourself a hard time

You have done the right thing. I had a boarder collie about 6 years ago. A farmer I knew wanted to take him off my hands when he was about 6 months old as he was a big collie and he wanted to use him for his sheep. I wished I had given him to him because he would have had a much better life if I had done. I felt I was too attached to him to let him go.

My life changed, didn't have the horse anymore and went on to have 4 DC. The dog didn't get the attention he deserved. He still had a good life and was a lovely dog but he was a working dog not designed for a chaotic family home.

Now my youngest DS is 4 we have got a goldendoodle who is more suited to family life (though I have noticed not as intelligent ). He is now 14 wks old and has been "burrowing" in the snow and loving it.

We left getting another dog until the circumstances were right and (hopefully) not going to change much.

Rest assured you have done the right thing.

BTW I had a friend (future wife of said farmer) who had to have her border collie bitch put down as she was agressive to everyone when she didn't get enough exercise (she was a rescue dog) - she couldn't take the risk passing her on to anyone when she became pregnant.

I had a border collie as a child and she was the most aggressive dog that I have ever come across as she needed so much attention, needed to run and run and was just so clever it was frightening. They are often not good dogs around children-you have done absolutely the right thing although it must be a very sad day for you all

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 02/02/2009 14:46

We had to rehome our JRT in similar circumstances. It's very hard but the rith thing to do.

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 02/02/2009 14:46

sorry- right thing to do

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/02/2009 15:19

def the right thing to do

you have to think of the dogs needs as well of yours

as he is at friend of a friend, maybe you can visit him sometimes?

MadameCheese · 02/02/2009 16:00

Oh thanks so much, your messages mean a lot. Yes, he is only up the road and she said we can see him. Just washed his bed to take round to her and his water bowl is still in the kitchen, oh blow! Pink, your JRT wasn't called Basil was it?

Don't beat yourself up. You have found the right home for him. You did the best thing for him and that is good.

MadameCheese · 02/02/2009 18:44

Sounds like he's had a brilliant day with her already!!!

Nope he wasn't called Basil. He was/is a fab dog though. We don't see him anymore as he is in another part of the country, on a small holding. Hopefully still having the time of his life. He would do anything for a tennis ball= even somersaults. I find a lot of comfort in knowingn we did the best thing for him as well ass us, if that helps.
