Have you taken him to classes?

bananapaddlepop · 31/01/2009 08:07

Oh yes we have the one that goes over the nose ( large german shepherd ) and it really does stop them pulling. We found the body harness didn't work great and he could still pull.

I've used them in the past and they do work - just be prepared for people to assume it's a muzzle rather than a halti and give you a wide berth!

Used one whilst pg during the icy winter. It was fantastic. I found I was able to hold a 35+kg dog with 1 finger! Would definitely recommend using one at the same time as working on trying to teach not to pull. The double approach worked really well for me.

same as banana complete with gsd

Our dog does walk fine ona normal lead but I do liek to know that using my wait I have complete control of her uncase something completely unexpected happens. Theyr enot cruel either like choke collars.

Like Bella said we do find people assume its a muzzle which is funny as shes more likely to drown you in licks than hurt you

They are great, but some dogs take a bit of getting used to them so persist with it for a while until he gets used to it. I strongly advise you to use a lead on the collar as a back up lead for a while as it is possible for them to get the halti off over their faces if they push forwards with their paws - which many dogs do to start with. If you have a lead attached to the collar as well you have hold of that as a back up until he is used to it. I have used a halti for many years with my now old labrador and walks became so much more fun for me once she wasn't pulling me all of the time. We did the whole dog training classes etc - she was good as gold off the lead but for some reason if I put the lead on her she went deaf!!!!

mysterymoniker · 01/02/2009 18:18

you can make a v effective one using a standard slip lead, just twist and loop over the nose

obviously there is no substitute for training but what often happens (to me ) is the dog learns to walk beautifully to heel in the village hall (or where ever the class is held) both on and off the lead but reverts to pulling like a tank off it again
