plenty of bedding, extra feed and can you move the cage into warmer area eg porch/garage etc?

Joolyjoolyjoo · 03/01/2009 18:11

I put tarpaulin over the whole hutch, and some bubblewrap. I do make sure there is some air getting in, though!

memoo · 03/01/2009 18:12

You definately need to cover them to protect them from the cold.

We have an insulated hut cover that we bought from petshop and then that has a waterproof cover of the top. not sure about a quilt though, it might not really keep the warm in if it gets wet

babyjjbaby · 03/01/2009 18:14

haven't got any bubble wrap they have a tarpaulin over the front of hutch to keep rain out the rabbit moves all the hay so he just sits on the floor of the hutch so not sure extra bedding would help

Would some baby blankets be any use to you? I was going to ebay them but if your animals are cold I don't mind them going to baby animals rather than baby humans.

Oooo Oooo Oooo, I want to know this too, bj, especially as the rabbit (they have separate hutches) decided her bedroom was going to be her bathroom last year when we got her. She spends the whole time in the cold bit.

Macdog · 03/01/2009 18:18

where are you?
I have some insulated bubble wrap sheeting that I used to line (now departed) dog's kennel

babyjjbaby · 03/01/2009 18:28

i am in gloucester

would putting blankets in there help he sits in teh cold bit asweel as he uses the bedroom bit to poo in so we put his litter tray in there dunno what we could do to help guinea pig as he goes in this little plastic igloo thing from pets at home

Only problem with blankets can be if they chew them- could potentially cause an impaction and a very sick bunny

Macdog · 03/01/2009 18:30

Sadly I'm in Scotland
Some advice here

Macdog · 03/01/2009 18:31

What about layers of newspaper where he sits too

babyjjbaby · 03/01/2009 18:55

trie dpapaer sonce b4 he just chewed them up thats why i thought bout the quilt to sor tof insulate the hutch from the outside

our hutch for our piggies is in the garage atm (no car in there) hutch is off its legs and sat on some old carpet on a bench. Inside their hutch in their sleeping area I have put a smaller box that the 3 of them can fit in. I've packed hay around that box. Then I have a plastic cover over the front to keep out drafts.

When the grass temp gets above freezing they go out on the lawn to get some grass. When its really cold or damp they get to play in dds wooden playhouse for a few hours.

I'm feeding them more calorie dense food to help them stay warm too.

Our pigs are quite pampered

One thing I wouldnt do is move them from being outdoors at day to into a heated room at night. Temp variation would be too great.

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 03/01/2009 19:11

our 2 piggies are fairing ok huddles together - they sleep in a plaggy igloo thing within the hutch and i have just chucked some bubble wrap type sheet over the front mesh bit to stop rain and wind blasting them. They seem happy enough. I considered bringing them in but thought being the 2nd winter outdoors they are pretty weathered now. They have fur coats

babyjjbaby · 03/01/2009 19:11

i don't have a shed to put them in as my rabbits cage is huge 6ft long and about 2ft deep as he is a giant rabbit they go out on the concrete in the day buttons sits in his litter tray and jasper stays in his igloo
