Got a proper fright to find it on the floor!! think it had lay there for an hour but i just thought i'd try ot put it back in the water and guess what its swimming about quite happily!!

its a christmas miracle!!!

(gutted really - its dd's fish and wwe're moving soon! was secretly hoping we didnt have to take it with us!! Fed up changing the water!!)

its now got hannah montana to look at - i've put her book over most of the top of the tank to stop any more escaping!!

out for an hour and not dead

must be a miracle!!

I had a goldfish that used to do that! Obviously didn't do it any major harm, as it lived for over two years.

LovelySongBirdSeed · 29/12/2008 20:27

don't mean to be mean but it will probably die.
thats what they do when they are very ill

Shitemum · 29/12/2008 20:29

I thought they did that when the water was too stagnant?

moondog · 29/12/2008 20:32

Story in the paper today of one who did just that and survived 13 hours out of water.

AnarchyAunt · 29/12/2008 20:39

Apparently it is because there is too little oxygen in the water. Change it, or aerate it, or try oxygenating tablets.

Goldfish just jump as do many other kinds of fish. Many of them do and might not have anything to do with the aquarium or the water quality. Of course, if they did it in a pond, they'd be more likely to land back into water

It's one of the reasons that all aquaria should have lids, ideally

RubberDuck · 29/12/2008 20:41

(wouldn't hurt to do a water test though if you haven't done one recently, but generally... fish like jumping)

As proof... a good basic how to look after goldfish guide:

"#3 The importance of a hood. Goldfish have been known to jump out of uncovered tanks. Buying a hood for your tank is an easy way to avoid this calamity, while also providing a platform for lighting.
