We have a 12 year old cat - she is my good friend and has been with me through alot.

She is rather large.. was 18lbs in weight - now 14lbs. but until 4 days ago would still eat ANY food left out on the side (including brocoli and peppers)

She has stopped eating - she is walking with an arched back all the time and got a rather large lump to the left hand side of where her tail joins her body.

Our other cat died 2 Januaries ago and I can't bear the idea that this is a big illness.

Vets appointment at 6pm tonight..
anyone have positive stories about back arching and lack of appetite.

So sorry about your cat - it's awful when they are suffering and can't tell you what's wrong . There are a number of things that a lump could indicate other than the obvious one. She's is probably in pain, which would explain the back-arching and lack of appetite, and a lump could well be some kind of cyst or abscess that is infected, and easily cured with anitbiotics/draining or a small operation. Of course the vet will be able to tell you more, and I'm no expert (unless you count nearly 30 years of cat ownership ), but I hope it helps to be able to imagine a slightly less dire scenario than the one you might have in mind.

Let us know how it goes at the vet's, wont' you? At least you can get her in there before Christmas.

Thanks Daisy - the only thing I could think is cancer!

So you think walking with a very arched back is because her leg is painful? as opposed to her back being painful?

poor puss.... i hope it is something relatively minor and the vet can sort it easily.

lots of positive vibes on their way to her

all is well
huge cyst (sorry if TMI) the size of half a tennis ball that burst as the vet put his hand down her back to see where it hurt!

so we maaged to get away with an antibiotic injection

Phew!

thanks for all your kind words
