My dog has been being sick since this morning, i thought maybe it was something he had eaten that made him a bit dodgy. Now he seems to being sick water. I cant get him to a vet now as my dh is at work and have dd in bed asleep. He is a shih tzu puppy he is only 13 weeks old. Any advice please???

Has he had his jabs? When did you start taking him out/socialising him with other dogs? How often/how many times has he been sick? Does he have the runs too? Is he listless? Does he have a temperature? (hows his nose hot/wet/dry)

Offer him water little and often, not too much in bowl as this could induce more vomiting.

Take him to the vet first thing.

pandagirl03 · 03/12/2008 23:00

Yes he has had all his jabs, had his last jab end of oct, we took out about 2 weeks after that but he hasn't seen any other dog when we have been out, only my dads dog when we go to his house.

he has been sick prob about 7/8 times now, times seem to vary. It seems everytime he is eating or drinking water he is being sick roughly 10 mins after.

Hasn't got the runs, has hardly been to poo today. He keeps whimpering on and off. He is definatly not himself at all, just lying there.

Just felt his nose it seems dry, not sure if that is normal to be honest.

Thank you for trying to help me.

I would say you need to stop feeding him for 24 hours
If our dog is badly sick she misses a meal and as she gets 2 a day that gives her a 24h break

Then we start her on plain rice and then a bit of chicken with it next meal

As you pup is so little I would get him to the vet first thing. Can you phone a local 24h vet or animal hospital for advice?

pandagirl03 · 03/12/2008 23:06

Yes i can call vet on 24hr line but as selfish as this might sound, its not meant to be honestly as i am very worried about him. But if they say bring him in i cant, as no one here to look after dd.

no but at least they can advise you

If it is really bad then you can surely wake dd and go in? plenty of taxi firms take dogs

pandagirl03 · 03/12/2008 23:26

Yes i would definatly take him if i thought it was serious, i would not want him to suffer anyway. I am nearly in tears here, poor little mite wish he could tell me whats wrong. Will be at vets first thing if not later tonight. Thank you.

How is he now?

iggypiggy · 04/12/2008 09:34

Hope you've found out what was wrong with him - just in case you haven't, one possible option is kennel cough? I only say this becuase when my dog got it he was retching/ bringing up bile - so initially I thought he was sick from something he had eaten, but it was actually coughing. you can test for it by gently pressing the windpipe. If it makes them retch it is likely to be kennel cough.

Alternatively - if it is a bug - you can feed plain boiled chicken and either rice (slightly undercooked) or mashed potato for a few days until he is better.

As he is so young you'll need to keep a close eye on him. Personally I'd get to the vet if I could, but obviously see if he improves.

Hope he gets better soon

BellaKissedSanta · 04/12/2008 09:44

I'm not a vet but I used to be a vet nurse and I would have him seen straight away.

From what you say he sounds like a pup and the pain, not passing faeces, bringing everything straight back up could indicate an obstruction, e.g. by eating a toy or something. Don't mean to worry you but he really needs to see a vet asap.

If they are well in themselves and drinking okay then you can do the boiled chicken & rice, but from what you say this is very different.

HTH

BellaKissedSanta · 04/12/2008 09:46

Ooops - just saw the 13 weeks.

Defo to the vet asap.

BellaKissedSanta · 04/12/2008 16:50

How is he?

Hope he's okay.

pandagirl03 · 04/12/2008 17:48

Hello thanks all for the replys, i was up most of the night checking him, He slept all night. Dh came in at 6.30am. He gave him some weetabix as someone told us to feed him a little bit of that will cool boiled water. He eat that and drank his water, I came down at 7.45am and it was like seeing a different puppy. He was full of life. Today he has had another lot of weetabix and then one of his normal meals. He has not been sick at all and is full of life. Running around now you would of never of thought he was ill yesterday.

Thanks for all the advice, obviously if he starts being ill again i will be straight to the vets this time. But all looks and seems good with him.

BellaKissedSanta · 04/12/2008 22:27

Glad to hear he's better. Is he pooing okay now?

Hallo Newpup - yes, it's me in my sparkly Christmas ensemble! My boy is doing great, thanks, but is huge. I followed him in the snow today looking at these enormous Yeti pawprints thinknig 'no, that can't be him!'

How is your furry bundle of joy?

newpup · 05/12/2008 06:56

Huge!!!! Gangly long legs she can't co-ordinate, looks something akin to a baby giraffe most of the time!

Love her to bits though - even if she ate my favourite pants!

BellaKissedSanta · 05/12/2008 09:39

Oh crikey, not your favourite pants - lol!

Will say nothing about toy rotation charts

staffylover · 06/12/2008 19:52

can`t your daughter go with you?
