HELP - speedy horse advice needed please....

Just taken my horse out for ride, went to trot and he is almost on 3 legs, lame behind but sound at walk. On close inspection there is some swelling just above the fetlock, towards the back and a little heat. Question is, do I turn him back out in field with companion - he's a thoroughbred and occasionally has blonde moments and gallops about for no particular reason, which I think is how he's done this. Or try and keep him in yard, which is a smaller space although he still has tendency to muck about, but obviously can't gallop - still prances and rears tho'. Can't stable him satisfactorily as he weaves and generally hates it - even with mate next door that he can see. Should I put anything on it - poultice or something, or just wait a while and see what happens....

If it were me I'd cold hose it and keep him in yard, especially if the ground is as soggy with you as it is with use!

Thanks - I'd put him out to see if he would settle, and he's just standing there resting the leg, and hasn't put his head down to eat at all. I think I'll bring him in, hose as you suggest and give him some bute then see in the morning. We're very soggy, luckily have bark chips in the yard so can dry their feet out without standing on the hard concrete.
