Dog breeds for beginners

We really want a dog and we have done for ages but have only just moved into a house with a garden. Only problem is we can't seem to choose a breed. There are so many we like.

We'd really like to know what breeds are good with children and easy to train.

We both grew up with dogs and my mum has 2 dogs and DS is very used to them. We aren't planning on getting the dog until maybe April/May time so we can spend time researching.

TIA

Hi there, I did an online breed finding quiz - My requirements were a dog that was good with children, small/medium size, didn't shed lots, needed medium excercise, bit of intelligence and didn't yap too much.
The results matched me with either a Border Terrier or a Schauzner (small one), we went for The Border and haven't regretted it for a second. He's got so much character and the whole family adore him, he's also a saint with my two year old despite being chased around a lot!

It's good to think about whether you want an intelligent breed I must say, you might think you do, but they can need re-training as they find ways around the rules sometimes! I've had both daft and clever dogs and the daft ones seem to stick to their training a bit better, but then I like a cheeky dog
