Farty, smelly cat

OK, don't laugh ...

Recently my cat has gone off the food she has always eaten, and rather than let her starve we've changed her food. But my God, has it made her stink ...

She's never been a farty, smelly cat before so I'm assuming it's the food that's done it - but it's the only food at the moment (apart from fresh fish) that she will eat, so I'm not sure I want to change it.

At the risk of opening myself up to ridicule (why else do you think I would change my name?) is there anything that I can do before she stinks the place out?

Someone must know if there's something I can do, other than invest in a gas mask? I don't even mind if you laugh at me, just tell me what I can give her to take the stink away!

I would change the food again. I have 2 very fussy cats and I regularly have to change the food. The most accepted have been felix, Gourmet mini-fillets that are currently on offer in Sainsburys, sainsbury's Paws and M&S (thankfully they went off that again quite quickly!)!. I also give dry food with the wet - some Iams generally, so if they're being fussy about the meat then there is dry. They both hate Whiskas and anything too cheap.

She's been on Felix and Felix Senior for years, I've tried her with other stuff but the only thing she'll eat is Felix As Good As It Looks (although at the moment it should be renamed Felix As Bad As It Smells).

If I change it back she won't eat. She can't have dried food, either.

I felt obliged to help after snorting at you repeatedly. Thought some pet forum or other might be a mine of information about farty cats.

I suppose all I can think of now is to call the vet and ask his advice. Either that or resort to home cooking fish and chicken each night.

You might need to wait a bit longer to see if her system gets used to the new food. In the meantime I think you can get some kind of charcoal tablets that you might be able to crush up in her food which helps with wind (you can for dogs), you might find it in your pet shop or even supermarket.

I can stand being snorted at repeatedly. It's the being farted at repeatedly that's getting up my nose. Literally.

I'll try the pet shop for some charcoal tablets, charleypops.

It's enough to turn the milk sour! Honestly, even dh's farts aren't as bad as the cat's are - and that's saying something. She's never had this problem before and I hope to God she never gets it again.

Pretty stinky, particularly as she'd thrown up all over the carpet this morning ... good old dh kindly ignored it and left it for dd to find (with her bare feet - ugh) and me to clean up .

Oh. Poor old puss. Is she ok? Por old DD too. There is nothing in the world worse than cat vomit squelching inbetween your toes. Ewwwwwww.

The cat's fine, stuffing her face with a vengeance again so I can expect the delightful scent of Eau de Fart to start wafting across the room very shortly.

I don't know about cinnamon to take the smell away, I think I need some industrial strength air freshener or something (why the snurk, pray tell?).

I think dd will survive, she rather liked the feeling of it squelching between her toes (the child is a grub, I tell you).

She's been on Felix for years, Felix Senior for about 12 months, but at the moment she won't eat anything other than Felix As Good As It Looks. My MIL has just lost her cat so we have hoards and hoards of other brands in at the minute to try, and she won't touch them.

She's still smelling like something from the bottom of a swamp ...

no,no,no,no.no!!!!! can try & help you nottelling as am veterinary nurse! (or was before i became a sahm!). Would def get smelly cat checked by vet first to make sure it is just farts and not anal glands or infection. When changing cats (or dogs) diet should do it very gradually over a number of days, slowly replacing more old for new, this give their system time to adjust. As for felix...well all canned/sachet/small tub food they are not at all great, contain mostly water (why pay for it when it comes out the tap?) and tend to be v high in salt & sugar which is why cats like them. I mean we'd all prefer chocolate to greens wouldn't we!!
Best thing all round is to try & get cat onto dry diet (why do you say cat can't have it? should be no reason as far as I know!), it will definately help things in the whiff dept..
