Hi all,

I have never had a dog but am a bit worried about a puppy my friend has bought. Its a spaniel (long silky ears...not sure which type). I asked her how it was going and she said some parts good, some not so good. She is out of the house all day (today from 8.30am until 3pm). When I asked if the puppy gets bored or chews things she said no, that he is in a crate and likes it in there.

I've seen this crate, he has room to turn round in it and lie down. Surely this can't be right? That a 12 week old puppy spends the vast majority of the day in a crate, without any company?

What do you think?

I think my Sister kept her pup in a similar crate while they were both at work...

That does seem rather too long alone for a pup. The crate is probably a good thing though, dogs really do seem to see them as secure dens not cages.

Maybe if its a very laid-back little chap who curls up and goes to sleep while its alone its ok.

The crate in itself is a good thing but that is far too long to leave a dog alone. Dogs are sociable animals and the poor thing will be lonely and bored to tears. They will also probably be shocked when the poor pup doesn't socialise well (gee, wonder why). Spaniels particularly are such affectionate, bouncy, friendly little things.

At the very least they should pay for a long walk with a dog walker in the middle of the day. PErsonally if I had to leave my dog for that long I would put her in to day creche with my walker.

oh ok...I just thought they needed more company/exercise than that. I will stop worrying.....

Thanks

Way too long, even for an adult let alone a pup.

hey, crates are supposed to be a good thing for dogs. But not too sure about that length of time and a puppy.
My dogs are pretty laid back, dont chew anything and like their own space and time and have never been crate trained, but i know others who use crate training effectivly. x

The crate is fine. It's just the time that is a worry.

The time is way too long, no question. I would class it as cruel tbh
