Have fallen in love with pugs and would love one - what are they like?

Has anyone had a pug or know anything about them? Have heard they have quite good temperaments and are good with children, but would appreciate some btdt. Would not be getting one in the near future but probably in a few years. Are they prone to a lot of health problems? TIA

I can't stand them myself, but I may be biased because my brother was bitten by one as a baby. (Tbf, he shouldn't have followed it under the chair.)

However, each to their own, so...

"Pugs catch colds easily and are stressed by hot and cold weather. They are prone to allergies and the short muzzle contributes to chronic breathing problems. (Pugs suffer from poor ventilation.) They are not the easiest whelpers. Expect Cesarean Section if breeding. There is a chance of keratites (inflammation of the cornea) and ulcers on the cornea. The delicate eyes are prone to weeping. This breed tends to wheeze and snore, but on the whole is a very easy-care dog. Do not overfeed a Pug, as they will eat more than is good for them, quickly becoming obese and living much shorter lives. Prone to skin problems. Pone to Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE), an inflammation of the brain that strikes adolescent Pugs usually between the ages of 2 and 3. The cause is unknown."

I like them but havent had any, what about about joining a pug forum.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 11/10/2008 21:48

Thanks. That sounds a bit horrible, OldLady, may rethink my choice! I know all pedigree dogs are prone to health problems but they sound a bit horrible. May have a look for a pug forum and have a bit of a lurk, thanks.

I misread the thread title as "have fallen in love with plugs"...

Was going to suggest a visit to the doctor [gein]

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 00:06

lol at plug love Probably not that much more sane though. Think fallen in love should be replaced with 'quite like.'

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 12/10/2008 00:10

giggleWitch! Happy Birthday by the way

I'd like a tan one controlfreaky. But am a bit put off by health probs tbh. Not that I can afford one at the moment anyway, would have to wait for a few years.

just a thought if you are going to hang out on a pug forum!

tink123 · 12/10/2008 16:56

I would be careful about a pug. I believe they were on that panorama program about pedigree dog scandal and they are a very sick breed due to health problems. If you get one, make sure it is healthy or maybe speak to a vet for an opinion.

They are very cute though, don't blame you

tink123 · 12/10/2008 16:57

i meant to say due to interbreeding

Every pug I've ever met has had chronic wind. Apart from that they are lovely, friendly little things on the whole.

hollyandnoah · 13/10/2008 23:10

they are lovely. but i think they are one of the sickest breeds, or so that panorama thing said! They also mentioned cavaliers, and i have three who are all healthy so far!
