Can an indoor goldfish go outdoors?

(in water, obviously). We have a goldfish (that we were given) in a tiny tank in the living room. Makes me feel sad. If I made a pond in the garden would the goldfish survive the transition or is there anything special I need to do/know? Thanks

we put our goldfish on our friends pond cos I could no longer stand the smell of it and wanted to liberate it to be free.
I think it has survived
