how do you get your dog to take tablets?

my dog has to start taking a tablet twice a day. usually we use pedigree worming tablets that she loves and just eats but at other times for flea tablets etc i just prise open her mouth and put it at the back and massge it down holding her mouth closed untill its gone. but she doesnt like this. i didnt mind having to do it every now and again for fleas but not twice a day she will hate me.

i have tried mixing it with a small amount of dog food she ate around it. i thought i could hide it in a treat or something. the first one i hid in a chicken nugget and she ate that fine but i cant cook chicken nuggets every day just for the dog, plus am not sure that they are very good for her. is there any other way i could hide it?

are dogs allowed cheese? i thought they werent meant to have dairy..

for dogs who won't eat tablets voluntarily - open their mouth, put tablet right at back of throat, close mouth and rub throat to make them swallow. Only do this if you are comfortable handling your dog.

sorry about that my dd2 has taken an interest in my laptop. ill try cheese then we always have loads of that.

lol! have been there with my cats!! i do the holding and the mouth opening while dh stays scratch free and pops the pill in.

I have 2 dogs, one who will take tablets straight out of my hand and eat them the other one will not take them at all. I can wrap/hide it in anything and she will eat that but spit out the tablet. I have to open her mouth put it at the back of her tongue and hold her mouth closed and rub her throat. Its awful, she gags, but it is the only way with her.

Crush tablet up between two spoons and sprinkle onto their food. That's the way I've always given my dogs tablets. They have dry food and it seems to work for them.

I pop them in a blob of butter, they usually swallow it with great enthusiasm!

If not pull down on the bottom jaw tilt the head back and drop it in, then shut the jaws and stroke the neck whilst still holding head back.

yeah that second one is what i have been doing milf. she really doesnt like it. its how we have always done tablets but i dont want to upset her twice a day.

ill try butter or cheese.

Dairy should be fine, avoid chocolate (for the dog anyway )!

Well, my dog (springer) would eat stones if you put them in her food bowl so I don't have trouble with tablets

I would put them in some cheese if I did, or something else palatable, or resort to the massage the throat technique. If I didn't own a gannet that is.

we used to put them in a wee lump of cheese with my parents old dog.

dogs should not have human chocolate as it contains something that is poisonous to them. they cannot digest dairy and they shouldn't really have pork either. saying that the only way I got pills down my dogs throat was to insert them into a malteser!!
ham or cheese he just opened up and left the pill as he did with everything else but maltesers worked a treat. I used the white choc ones as that doesn't have the poison in it.

Either;

  1. Crush tablet and mix it into some bravy (like bisto or propr gray if you are a cooking whizz. OF
  1. Buy the new wormer that you put on the back o their neck like spot on.

sorry they are not wormers they are epiphin or something to prevent fits, i just mentioned the wormer tablets because thats what we buy her as she really doesnt like tablets. she needs these ones twice a day. and i dont want to her getting upset twice a day. plus she has only been on them two days and already knows and hides when she sees me with her pill box!!

ill use cheese for now and ask the vet what i can hide them in when she goes back in a fortnight.
