My cat has kidney cancer

His younger sister died of it last year too. He's 14 and has been a wonderful cat all that time. Kidney function indicators are through the roof, and vet said that in a cat with kidney failure he'd have collapsed by now. And they need to test for feline leukemia to see whether our other cat (unrelated) is at risk too.

Prob only a few weeks left with him.

I had a semi feral cat with kidney failure. She lived a few years with just one kidney working. The only time she let me handle her was when I took her to the vet for the last time.
Give her lots of cuddles

oh how sad. I have a 14 yr old cat too and we all love him desperately.

How can you tell he was ill? Sorry the oldest cat we have had, and am always paranoid that he might get poorly now.

I hope he is ok and not in pain

He's not in pain, and although a bit slower than usual, seems pretty OK in himself. He's lost a lot of weight over the last week or so, but the very telling thing was when he went off his food 3 days ago. This is very unlike him, and I can only tempt him to a couple of mouthfulls of chicken - even off my plate.

Will just have to face doing the final thing for him as we did for Mendy. We'll then bury their ashes together.

Stupid being this upset, I knew he couldn't go on forever, but he's been with me through so much - got him when I was young and single, so he's been with me through getting together with DH, getting married, moving, getting his sister, so many miscarriages, birth of DS, death of his sister. Its like the constant in my life is going..

oh it's not stupid being so upset. He is part of your family.

I'm so sorry you are going through this, especially after all the other terribly sad things that have happened to you.

Now I am almost in tears for you

oh am sorry to hear this.
My old lady(lived to 20 [smile[ ) was in kidney failure.
She wasn't in distress, drank loads though.

You do whats best, and when the time comes for him to go join his sis you will know.

I'm so sorry. My cat had kidney failure at 19 yrs. He started to lose bladder control and wet himself on two occasions, once sleeping on our bed, and once sleeping on the sofa (although the fleece pet blanket folded into four soaked it up!) He was losing his balance and strength in his legs. When he lost interest in scrounging whatever we were eating, I knew it was time to let him go.

Again, a faithful companion through all my life traumas. The vet sent me a lovely hand-written in fountain pen letter of condolence a couple of days later. You have every right to grieve for your pet, and it is far from stupid. Try to enjoy the time you have now, take some photos to keep.

We had to have him put to sleep on Tuesday - he just wouldn't eat over the weekend and I was reduced to syringing glucose into him so that he might keep going until DH got back Monday night. He didn't have long left, and I thought he was going to die in my arms when we were driving to the vets. We cried and cried in there, but they were lovely.

Decided that we would get a new cat straightaway, so went to the Cats Protection League that afternoon, and now have a 7 week old kitten - and the other cat is accepting her really well. DS is totally enamoured too.

I miss him so much and keep expecting him to come and yowl at me to turn the tap on though

I had to get a kitten soon after my cat was pts too. I needed something to stop me thinking of her all the time. You don't have much chance to feel sad with a kitten in the house. They are so funny!

so sorry cmotdibbler. the same thing happened to my parents' cat about 3 weeks ago, she was 16 and they were (are) devastated. my dad often goes into the garden to 'talk' to her which sets my mum off!

we're a family of animal lovers so i know exactly how you feel, good on you for getting another feline friend (espec a rescued one ), that will help you all i think.
