Anyone introduced an older kitten to a younger one? (or just a new one)

I am thinking of getting another kitten; my one seems quite lonely so I think a new one would be nice as I'm going to be out all day every day soon.

I could afford to do this in a couple months but want to be prepared

Is it even possible to introduce an older kitten (nearly 1yrs old) to a new kitten (either a young one or older - less that 1yr tho)?

Any hints and tips? I dont' have many places the new one could be shut away - DS's bedroom is about the only place (DS co-sleeps you see) so is that even possible?

I often wonder if my 13 year old cat is lonely but think it is too late to bring a new kitten in now.

Why not go to the RSPCA and asked for advice?

It will take them time to get used to each other but generally cats will accept a new kitten. I think it helps if its a kitten rather than another cat as the older cat is automatically dominant.

Hi we had two kittens and then sadly one was killed at 18mo so we had just one... until a tiny 4mo old followed my son home and stayed! THey hissed at each other a bit and we kept their food and beds apart to begin with and after a couple of weeks they were mates and now they adore each other!

We have 4 cats of varying ages and then kittens every 9 weeks, they all have their moments and the tinies get trodden on or pushed out the way every now and then but generally the cats get on better than the kids.

Do you have to keep them apart for weeks on end, opening the door to let them "see but not touch" each other and all sorts or is that just being OTT?

I think my 11mo kitten (cat!) would really benefit from a younger kitten as from September, I'm out of the house from 7am-7pm

We certainly never had to do that with any of ours. Seperate beds and food area etc are a good idea top start with but other than that they should be fine. Expect a bit of hissing and the odd swipe of the paw but thats about all.
