Have worked it out. think it's a bit like fishing/blood sports.

spring - voles
summer - shrews
autumn/winter - mostly mice with a few voles thrown in.

and for special occasions we go hunting for moles and weasles.

spring _voles, shrews, mice, rats, rabbits, birds
summer _voles, shrews, mice, rats rabbits, birds
autumn_voles, shrews, mice, rats, stoats, birds
winter_voles, shrews, rats, mice, stoats, birds

with a few moles, pheasants, weasels and a mink or 2 thrown in

he's not fussy about the seasons

my Persian catches things but never kills them so we sometimes come down in the morning to find a bird perched somewhere or several cats cornering a terrified mouse under a cupboard!

definately shrew season here. she doesn't eat them like she does mice and voles though. they must taste worse.

we try not to get close enough to her prey to be able to tell - i think she had a shrew a couple of days ago.

she was trying to get into the house with it but NO WAY was i letting her in.

Mine feasts on the fat wood pidgeons that live out the back!

do your cats ever eat moles? my cat will never eat a mole, just kill it and leave it on the back door step. Even the dog won't eat it and she'll eat just about anything
