Pet Kennels or a pet sitter at home—which is better for dogs?

Would you recommend a home pet sitter instead of a kennel for dogs that have never stayed away from their owners? I’m wondering if Rio and Lio would feel more comfortable staying at home with someone looking after them, especially as I’ll need a week to recover from surgery. Has anyone tried both options? I’d love to hear which worked better for your dogs.

I have years and years of dog ownership and firmly believe that different options suit different dogs.

most people will say that staying in their own home is best for them: and it can be for some, others struggle with a stranger in their space.

Ive had some that are better with home boarding, they go to a private /dog sitters home, and others that prefer their own space and kennels are best for them.

You know your dogs, what do you think is best for them?

Dog sitter, but that's my sister who is adored by anything with 4 legs

Mine goes to a dog sitter in her home and is fine. My neighbour's dog goes to a kennels and loves it. I think it totally depends on your dog.

It's hard to find good sitters / kennels and most get booked up months in advance. You should do an overnight trial beforehand whichever option you choose.

@Giraffehaver @Tortephant @unsync Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences! I agree that it really depends on the dogs and what they’re most comfortable with. As a pet parent to Lio and Rio, I’m trying to figure out what would be best for them, especially since they’ve never really stayed away from us before.

A neighbour suggested trying Lucky Dog Retreat -Montgomery here in Ohio, so I’m considering that option alongside having a pet sitter look after them at home. I feel like staying at home might be less stressful for them, but I’m also wondering whether they’d enjoy the change of environment and company at a kennel.

I really like the suggestion of doing an overnight trial beforehand. If anyone has experience with Lucky Dog Retreat -Montgomery or has used a pet sitter in Cincinnati, I’d love to hear your thoughts! I just want to make sure Lio and Rio feel safe, comfortable, and well cared for while I recover from surgery.

I don’t know Ohio.

I do know people who always use, and rate, www.trustedhousesitters.com/lp/join-now/home/
