Thinking of cancelling my 10-year-old cat's insurance?

My cat is 10 and has always had pet insurance and never had a medical issue (touch wood).
My issue is I pay 40 quid a month and have never used my insurance, but more to the point, considering she is such a nervy/people hating girl, I'm not sure whether to continue.
Of course if she broke a leg or had a one off medical disaster, I would get that sorted.
But if she turned out to develop a condition that required regular vet visits, pilling and lifetime medication, I am genuinely not sure that would be a quality of life that would be right for her personality.
With that in mind, I'm considering cancelling the insurance. What do you think?

I get your reasoning but you might not feel the same when it happens. Cats get very used to taking medication if they have to do it regularly and it's not that stressful to them. They will never like a vet visit for sure, but you don't have to go that often for common chronic conditions.
By the end I was paying out over £400/ month for meds and sorely wished I had lifetime insurance!

Our cats have always been long lived - 22, 24 and 20. Didn't have insurance for any of them but saved a bit each month into a savings account for vet bills. The 22 year old had some tests at 21 which confirmed she has cancer. The treatment would have made her really sick and miserable so she lived for another year quite happily (still active and eating well) before dying in her sleep one evening curled up on the sofa with us. The 24 year old never went to the vet. The 20 year old developed young onset arthritis at 7 and had to have daily medication until his kidneys started to pack up at 20. Unfortunately we had to have him put to sleep. The medication meant he lived a full and active life. There was still money left in the savings account after he died.

So as long as you can afford treatment, including long term medication which means she can have a good life then don't buy insurance. I'd advise having savings specifically for vet bills.

My friends cat has been ill recently, vet bill was £2,500. I would keep the insurance.

At this stage I would keep up the insurance as your DCat is getting to an age where health issues can crop up. If you were starting with a young kitten you would be better off paying the money into savings. But if you stop insuring now, all your previous payments could be in vain if vet support is needed (older cats often get a variety of ailments: teeth problems, arthritis, kidney, urinary tract crystals, cancers…)

My current cat aged 3 has just been very ill and needed surgery. He was in the vet hospital for 3 days over a wknd. My bill is over £8k and although I have insurance I only have £4k of cover so I still have a big bill to pay. After this I would never not have insurance and I’d advise people to really think about stopping paying for it. Cats in their older age can develop all sorts of things and an old cat of mine lived to 19 and with a thyroid problem for years which we bought his medication for. I would’ve had to let my cat go this wknd without any insurance so only do it if u can really afford to pay for treatment

When our cat turned 12 we switched to accident only insurance. It cost about £7pm. We decided that if he did get an illness then we were not going to put him through anything invasive. We couldn’t give him regular medication as he sometimes didn’t come come for a day or two and we were not going to keep him housebound as that would diminish his quality of life. He died at 15 when he had kidney disease. He went downhill extremely quickly and the kindest thing to do was have him put to sleep.
