This is it isn't it?

My fourteen year old Bedlington Whippet has become painfully thin and developed 2 small white lumps on her ear and her leg.
She has always been my velcro dog but the last couple of days has made a nest of blankets under the table and spends most of her days there.
She is not interested in walks, in food or treats...not even her ball. All this is very unusual.
She HATES the car...always has...it causes maximum distress with her screaming, vomiting and messing herself.
When she does move, she moves freely and speeds round the garden like a pup.
I know I should get her to the vet but I'm dreading the journey and the outcome.
Should I call them first?

Could you see if they can come out to you? We have a vet locally that is mobile.

Giraffehaver · 20/08/2026 22:33

I can ask thank you

How are things now @Giraffehaver? Flowers

Giraffehaver · 23/08/2026 22:36

She was a bit perkier earlier and ate some white fish. I still think a vet visit is in order. Thank you so much for asking

I’m glad she seems a bit perkier. It’s so hard to decide isn’t it?

Giraffehaver · 24/08/2026 22:09

Took her to the vets. The good news is we took her home again. The bad news is that she is very ill.
She has a lump on one of her mammary glands and one in her stomach. She is discharging dark blood. She's had a blood test and we hopefully get the results tomorrow.
She's had an anti sickness jab and been given meds and 3 tins of special dog food which so far she's turned her nose up at.
Poor girl is exhausted. Take each day as it comes I guess

Vet phoned today and told me very gently that she has cancer and that its kinder to say goodbye. I've never seen my dh cry as much 😪

Sending love and hugs. It’s such a heartbreaking time. Grief really is the price we pay for love. She sounds like a wonderful well-loved dog.

Chaletwest · 25/08/2026 22:37

Oh bless you OP. Get a vet to come to you and never doubt you saved her suffering. It’s heartbreaking but you can do the kindest thing for your beloved girl. Thinking of you

Its so hard to make the kindest decision for your velcro doggy 😔 Have had to do this myself and I was just glad that we had given our Millie a wonderful life.I still think about her every day 7 years later.Sending hugs to you all X

wavingfuriously · 25/08/2026 22:58

So sorry @Giraffehaver 💔 but better to alleviate suffering. With my dogshare dog things went on too long and im afraid the dog suffered. Better to give her peace now. Good luck OP 💐

dontforgetme · 25/08/2026 23:17

So sorry op x

Giraffehaver · 27/08/2026 22:22

OhMyGoodieAunts · 27/08/2026 22:25

I’m not sure if your vet does home visits, but if not, then I can recommend Cloud 9. They are vets who come to your house to do home euthanasia. So sorry for you all.

Knickerstoya · 27/08/2026 22:28

I am so so sorry.

whippersnapper55 · 27/08/2026 22:35

I'm so sorry 😞 sending love and strength to you and your family 🫂 even though you know it's the right thing, it's so so hard 💐

Thesafetygeneral · 27/08/2026 23:27

I’m so sorry. It’s just heartbreaking. Your love for her shows, you’re doing the kindest thing for her when I know you must just want her to stay. She sounds very loved xx

pawsedforthought · 27/08/2026 23:29

Just sending love and hugs

Orders76 · 28/08/2026 00:27

Hope you're doing ok, we have the same ahead tomorrow.
16 year old lurcher who has rapidly thinned and lumps. We tried an injection couple weeks ago with vet but nothing has worked and he's skin and bone. Sometimes worst thing is to listen to the vet and be kind. Right thing and worst.

ExplodingSmittens · 28/08/2026 07:55

So sorry Giraffe. It must be unbearable but it does sound as though you’re making the right choice Flowers

WinterNightStars · 28/08/2026 08:53

I’m so sorry OP. We have the same decision to make too, likely this weekend. It’s heartbreaking x
