Should I continue to feed an 'abandoned cat'?

My neighbours recently moved out two weeks ago, leaving behind one of their two cats. The abandoned cat has been seeking shelter in my back garden since they left, and the property owners have closed off the cat flap. Despite not having a forwarding address for the owners, I have been caring for the cat by feeding and watering him these past two weeks. When I contacted the letting agent to express my concerns about the cat's welfare, the owner messaged me asking not to feed the cat and that he would collect him when convenient. However, the cat is still without a home, without food except from me, the cat still hasn't been collected and is solely reliant on me for food. I feel torn and unsure about what to do next. Should I continue caring for the cat (because without my care he wouldn't eat), or should I wait for the owner to make arrangements? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We did exact same thing, cat was abandoned. Now lives with us, feels safe, trusts us and has a better quality of life.

As if they want the cat back, imagine what state the cat would be in if uou didnt care for it.

Take it to a cat rescue first thing tomorrow - do the right thing.

Feed the bloody dcat. It's owner is a cunt.. If they haven't been for it the same day they aren't going to.
Oh and congratulations on your new family member..

I would hand it in to a local vet as abandoned , unless you want a cat in which case carry on and let it indoors

SqueakyFromme · 13/06/2026 22:25

Poor little cat, please keep feeding him and thank you for being so kind

user1471867483 · 13/06/2026 22:26

Unfortunately I can't take the cat myself as I have a cat of my own and the 'abandoned' cat and he don't get along, but I'm an animal lover and I feel sorry for it. I can't leave him to starve.

Contact a rescue like cats protection

user1471867483 · 13/06/2026 22:29

I've tried three animal homes and they say they're full to capacity.

The owner is so rude to tell me not to contact the letting agency in future. I had little choice and had to. How dare he dump his cat?

What kind of sick bastard abandons an animal like this?

Please look after it as best you can, and I agree with a pp about Cats Protection.

pizzaHeart · 13/06/2026 22:33

Your neighbour is a f* twat. They don’t care about cat at all. If they wanted to have him they would come straight away.
Of course you feed the cat.

DollyLeggs · 13/06/2026 22:37

I would feed the cat.
I would also bring cat indoors and isolate for a while then try very careful indoor supervised introductions between both cats. For me personally I have been able to do this several times but it does take time and patience.

user1471867483 · 13/06/2026 22:37

Thank you all. Of course, I'll feed him. How can any human tell me not to feed a cat? It will die. This is animal cruelty and I will contact the RSPCA for lodge a complaint for neglect and starvation.

How long should I wait until this awful guy collects his cat before I contact the RSPCA? It's been two weeks now since I've been feeding him, and 30 hours since his text to tell me he'll collect him and telling me not to feed him.

Feed the cat, contact the RSPCA now but they won’t do anything, keep contacting rescues until someone has space

HellsBells13 · 14/06/2026 00:41

What a subhuman that prick is. Do the right thing, I could never not help an innocent animal. Hoping a charity can help..

user1471867483 · 14/06/2026 00:47

I have never heard of anyone ask me not to feed a cat before. Does he want him to starve to death then? 😥

Is there a neighbour who might be able to take it in?

caringcarer · 14/06/2026 01:51

Feed the cat. You can get outside shelters for cats to live in if your cat won't tolerate another cat. You could get one of these. They sell them on Temu and they are not expensive. Over time your cat may get used to next door neighbours cat and tolerate enough to let him into house if you put a bed in separate place for new cat. Please continue taking care of this poor abandoned cat. Make sure it has shelter from sun in summer and access to water.

Edited

I had five cats, none of them got along.

Yes, continue to feed the cat, the owners sound like shit, and I would be adopting it in the same situation.

iateallthecakes1 · 14/06/2026 03:06

Whereabouts are you? I'll take him. Poor wee guy.

snowymarbles · 14/06/2026 03:45

we had a cat move in to ours a couple weeks ago. Posted it next door fb etc. everyone telling me not to feed it etc etc, there would be some family somewhere desperately missing it. it had worms, it was grubby, not chipped. It blatantly did not have a family that cared that much. It was neutered and desperate for human interaction so we suspect someone may have moved and left it. It’s currently been living in a back bedroom (with free access to outside) while we go back and forth in our minds over whether to keep it or not……..

Keroppi · 14/06/2026 04:02

Sometimes local charities ie not rspca or cats protection can help by trapping it and calling the owners, if they are too full to take it in. Ignore old neighbour what a cunt!
Maybe re contact the letting agents and pretend to be a random stranger saying they've seen it abandoned and scanned it's chip - sometimes people do that, there's a fb group by me called scan angels or something that do this. Stick it up on FB as a lost cat?

iamnotalemon · 14/06/2026 04:11

People are so cruel. How can the owner abandon him and then ask you not to feed it. Wtf. Very nice of you to feed the cat, poor thing.
Saying that, I’m in Dubai and so many people abandoned their pets during the conflict. It’s heartbreaking.

Not the RSPCA

cats protection or similar.

Monday morning. Explain the situation.

if the cunt turns up, tell him you did as asked, stopped feeding it & haven't seen it since. 💁🏻‍♀️

Just saying... this is how I ended up with boy cat. Existing girl cat wasn't impressed, but they became the best of friends! So I'd take him in myself.

How dare the stupid cunt think he can tell you who you can contact & who you can't.
